Nice sunrise! Clouds and heavy fog here at Christchurch, surveying the earthquake damage from 2011 . . .
Always nice to see pictures of tanks along with planes and ships and battlefields and......
Watch out for the crocs Carl.
Cairns is really great & Armour Fest will only make it greater.
Enjoy the experience Carl & I look forward to lots of photos!
Have fun Carl. Looking forward to those pics already. Cairns looks like its a beautiful spot.
The Australian Armour and Artillery Museum is fantastic - great collection, well curated with friendly and knowledgeable staff. I get home tonight so will post a report later this week.

I, too, am looking forward to your reportage, Carl! Your 'teaser' above heralds good things to come - didn't realize the Bovingtion Tiger had a stunt double
All the best,
Matt
Is this replica the same one used in Saving Private Ryan? I can remember that at Bovingdon after the film came out.
Run for your life - there are stupid people everywhere!
I seem to remember the Saving Private Ryan Tiger on a T-34 chassis, too...
Interesting that they actually specifically built a stand-in for the Fury Tiger's 'death scene'...not that they would have risked damaging the real one...
All the best,
Matt
Yeah, but they were sooooo much better than the M-47 tanks they used in Patton or The Battle of the Bulge to portray German tanks...but seeing the Bovington Tiger in Fury was a real treat!
All the best,
Matt
Someone has a garage to die for...
Very cool! Static displays are always good, but moving/working tanks (and planes) are ALWAYS sooooo much better!
Seeing the Churchill clanking around a display area would be awesome.
Personally, I think the PT-76 should be in East German markings - a loving reminder of my time in West Berlin...
All the best,
Matt
And they're always so much louder than one expects...

Interior view.
Nice. Swedish S-tank. Bit of a blast from the past...
I have to work today but have resized the (200+!!) photos ready to upload a selection so I will get cracking tonight. Hard to believe one of the largest private collections of armour and artillety is located 5 min outside a small tropical tourist city of Cairns.
More great shots here, guys! Love the BMP and T-72, and that room full of Tiger variants is primo, Dave - where is that located?
Very cool that the Jagdpanzer Kanone is at the entry to the museum there, Carl - another classic piece...
Keep 'em coming
All the best,
Matt
The teaser pics are getting better and better, Carl.
Great photos of the tiger room. Wish they hadn't moved al the tanks from Aberdeen. I did see a show where they fixed the Elephant so it could drive. They did a great job on it. The story behind it was that it was captured at Anzio. A lucky hit by a 37mm put it out of action when it hit the drive sprocket and it was abandoned.
I have posted the first part of my Ausarmourfest 2017 blog here - http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/ent...s-2-3-Sep-2017
This covers the 'west wing' of the museum which displays post WW2 vehicles.
Great photos, Carl! All the Cold War stuff is a stroll down Memory Lane - particularly the equipment used during the 1970s...and it all seems to be in gorgeous shape, by and large. From the track marks on the floor, it would seem that much of it still runs? I assume that where the 'ride tickets' might come in...
I look forward to seeing more as you have time to post - thanks for sharing these!
All the best,
Matt
Checked the BLOG and those are great photos. I think the two M113's with turrets were used by the Australians only. Have only seen pics in books of them but now a real photo of them.
Part 2 of my Australian Armour and Artillery Museum blog has been published here - http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/ent...airns-(Part-2)
Artillery in the spotlight for this one.
Looking forward to part 3.
Run for your life - there are stupid people everywhere!
That 88 seat wasn't exactly built for comfort..
and no seat belt when the gun fired..how did the guy stay on that seat?
probably beats the hell out of the roller coaster at the fun park!
super pics
lucky you!
I think I would like to take a ride in ALL of those beasties, Carl! Spoiled for choice, definitely - which one(s) did you and your mate pick?
All the best,
Matt
Part Three of my Ausarmourfest 2017 blog is up now - http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/ent...airns-(Part-3)
More WW2 armoured fighting vehicles than you can comfortably examine in eight hours!
