I should have noticed the screw before the bag I guess. I used to take the screw out and put a post in the hole but now just attach a bearing to the screw. Works very well for me. I emailed Dave the other day to see how thing are going with him and he is still backed up with BRS stuff people are ordering. Hope he can catch up and take a break for a few days.

Here is the start of some of what I have been doing this month. First up some Rumpler 6B1's. Since they are seaplanes I put an anchor decal on them.

Bob, bring your seaplanes to Gritty Goblin Games in February. We will probably have a need for them.
So how many books are in your personal library?

  8. #58

I will have them there. You just need the movement cards.

And here is another plane for this month. This is my attempt at Alexander Kozakov's MS type G. Trying to figure how to add the anchor to the plane but did put an anchor marking on the tail.

Yes he did that for the T&T game. Not attached to a plane but a great looking game aid to take down a tripod.

Here are some T-34's in winter camo. 1 is a captured Finnish one. I like that some come with 2 different turrets that can be changed. The top photo has a T-34/85 turret that comes in the kit. I have other photos to post so you will see a few more.

Matt I have gone down the hole already. Looking for the Pzkw IV Long barrel and it seems to be hard to find. A game store I have ordered form can't find it. They did get 2 Stug III's I have to pick up. Hopefully GF9 will have some at Cold Wars. Here are some of the British desert tanks I did.

You have slipped down the RH, to be sure, Bob! Great colors on the Desert stuff - and I agree with Pete...'The Haunted Tank' was an important part of my early reading, and then I found Bob Crisp's Brazen Chariots in paperback in the late 60s and it was off to the races. If you don't know it, it's a wonderful book about his time in Honeys during the war in North Africa.

I still have a stack of those comics. I remember I had #1 of the Haunted Tank but traded it for a number of other comics way back before they were collectable. I might have been 12 years old at that time.

    Rob.
One of my all-time favorite books on the Afrikakorps, Rob, is Uniforms, Organization, and History of the Afrikakorps by Roger James Bender and Richard D. Law - I bought my copy in '73 when it came out. The Afrikakorps and my reading about them is what convinced me I needed to join the Army and become a tanker......probably a good think the recruiting sergeant steered me into Intell instead...

In any event, there is a wonderful section in the book where they detail lots of various Kampfgruppen that existed over the course of the Afrikakorps existence. One that might fit your needs is the Afrikakorps Stab Kampfgruppe. It was formed on or near 14 April 1942 and was composed of :
    2./Flak-Abteilung 606
    one Zug/Panzerjaeger-Abteilung 39
    one Panzer-Zug (5 Pzkw IIs)
    one Zug from 1./Pioneer-Bataillon 33
    one Panzerspaehwagen-Zug/Aufklaerungs-Abteilung 3

This would allow lots of flexibility of models, most of which can be found in 1/285 or 1/300, I would think. For the Flak elements, you could have 88s, 20s, or 37s - either towed or with 20s or 37s on half-tracks or trucks. For the Panzerjaegers you could have the SP gun on the Pz I chassis, towed 37s or 50s. Panzers IIs in the tank platoon could be switched out for Pz IIIs with the short 50, if you wanted to. The platoon from the Pioneers could be represented by Opel Blitz trucks and a half-track or two. And the Recon element could be armored cars - 4-wheelers or 8-wheelers, as well as the smaller 250 half-track. Throw in Rommel's Sdkfz 250 with the antenna on top and you have a nice mix. The water and fuel carrying trucks could be Opels or captured British vehicles, and you could include a tanker truck or two if you'd like.

This relatively small unit as the combat escort 'company' (it is only 5 platoons, after all) of the Afrikakorps HQ seems like it would offer lots of variety for the game mat and all sorts of different targets waiting to be strafed...

If you want something a bit different, I am sure I can find something for you - the book has 33 pages of various KG and smaller units to choose from...

    All the best,
    Matt

Matt when I did 1/72 WWII stuff I used the Hasagawa Japanese Izuzu tanker truck for my DAK unit. I said it was an Italian truck that the Germans used. Also just picked up my Stug III and see that you can make different versions of it. 2 different mantel types and a 75mm or 105mm gun.

My younger son started making a pair of mail gloves some years ago. After about half a weeks solid work he had done about half of what you have there, and cave it up for a lost cause.
I just showed him this and he gave you an A grade for perseverance.

i couldnt say how many hours altogether, but i worked on it over a period of about 3 weeks or so. as it was i shouldve paced myself better. i really took a toll on my arthritic old hands and took almost as long to recover lol. guess, ill need to learn to pace myself better.

well, cutting the leather was fairly easy, as id done a bit of leatherworking back in my reenacting days. the sewing was another thing altogether as i couldnt use my usual leather sewing tools. basically i used a stout regular needle and needle nose pliers.

yes one of my games will be a tanks! game. ive come up with a ww1 adaption for the TANKS! minis game. itll be called "creeping thunder" lol!

Been a few days since I have been on. Nice tanks, chain maile, and planes. Expect a pic dump of new projects tomorrow.

On that note, been doing chain for 30 years and have a rack of a few projects in my basement, and tossing up some DAK tank pics from my collection for you in both Bolt Action and Flames of War scales.

Rob, the BA figs are 28mm or 1/56 scale (think 1/48 would be more scale in my opinion). Yep Karl, used to hang a clothes hanger off my locker when I was working in a factory. Could get 5 rows 60 rings across done every break and maybe twice as much during lunch. Every 5 or 6 weeks had enough done to make a shirt. Used to cut rings off a coil while watching movies on VHS after work so I would have cut rings the next day. Have made 30 shirts or more, and god knows how many coifs and other bits over the years. Fought my first few Pennsics in chain and wore it for the first 10 years or so I LARPed. Was still wearing it to hand out candy at Halloween until a year or two ago (Wife and I dress up in SCA Garb every year to hand out candy). Still have a shirt or two that fits but It Ain't like the old days when I could wear one shirt, and carry 2 or 3 more on my shoulders (at 35 to 40 pounds a shirt). Heck, been at least 10 years since I have been in armor to fight (getting old is hell).

SOOO.......I sit around and paint figs now.

Love the DAK, and the impressive array of maille!

(but HATE the term "chain mail", invented by thick Victorians who thought it was composed of 'chains' of links! I've spent decades re-educating the Public at reenactment events, and still it persists - there's no "chain" in maille!)

    Not your fault, mate!
No matter how often I tried, even "celebrities", "experts", "historians" and "presenters" continue to reinforce 'perceived wisdom' in films, TV, plays, books and so on..........

LOL...never got into sails...but have gotten into BLACK SEAS...smile...something about building my own ships and painting them....and rigging...and sails....and ratlines.....sigh.

Put my French up a month or so back and have a chunk of Spanish I finished this week except for sails and rigging.

Concerning the Maile issue, I can never get it right either and my library includes the Visby Dig report (with pics), Coppergate, Kingsbury, and loads of other primary and secondary source material. Heck, even had a copy of Stones Weapons, Armor (and the rest of a way too long title). I have a better collection of armor and historical books then some collages do. So I should know better by now.

    * Edit: To clarify, Never bought into sails, we do play it at the hobby store every now and then.

OK, been a while since I have posted new stuff. 3 Weeks of Marines for the LGS, some D and D style figs for a local, and part of my Spanish fleet minus sails and rigging. Have Civ War Rebs, a Hordes army, and some (24) Rev war/FI Brit and French troops on the paint table right now.
