    Default TABSCon: 2nd Annual Wings of War Tournament: June 16th, 2012

    Officers and Gentlemen of the Corps,

    The Toronto Area Boardgaming Society (TABS) is proud to present the Second Annual Wings of War Tournament to be held from 9:30am until 1:30pm at the June TABSCon! You can learn more about TABS and where TABSCon is held each quarter by pointing your browser to: www.tabsonline.net

    Up to 24 pilots, with no previous experience required, are asked to volunteer for hair-raising aerial combat and to support dangerous yet critical missions required by their respective GHQ. The pilots will be divided as evenly as possible into two sides, British & German with one pilot on each side elected to be the Squadron Leader who will also fly or allocate the special mission assets in either scenario. Two missions will be flown by all pilots. Points will be accumulated over the course of the tournament to determine the Top Ace of the Tournament. An Awards Ceremony will be held at the end of the tournament but all pilots will receive a team pin as an appreciation of their Bravery in the Face of Battle.

    The 2 scenarios are;

    Scenario #1. Let’s Go to the Circus – 20 turns maximum
    Situation: Oct 1917.
    Jagdgeschwader 1, with its most famous pilot Manfred von Richthofen, has caused tremendous losses in their area of operations. As the number of British pilots shot down increases, GHQ has decided to strike a blow for British morale by ordering a strafing run against the airfield where Richthofen’s Circus is located, hopefully catching some planes on the ground and destroying them. Aside from enemy planes that are on patrol, the base is expected to have local protection in the form of machineguns.

    Planes:
    German Fokker DRI and DVII will face British Sopwith Camels and Snipes.

    Special Scenario Rules:
    1. There are 4 planes on the ground, currently being serviced therefore are inoperable; these are the primary targets for British strafers.

    2. German ground defenses are 2 machineguns (MG), located within the vicinity of the airfield. The German squadron commander will decide where to place these 2 machineguns, subject to the following rules;
    a. both MG must be placed on the same mat as the airfield
    b. each MG must be placed more than one range stick away from the other machinegun
    c. MG use the B Damage Deck

    3. The 4 grounded planes and the 2 MG are targets that can be strafed by the British players. To strafe, the pilot’s last card played must be a straight card and the range to the target must not be greater than the equivalent of close range on the range stick. The strafing pilot then draws a damage card from the appropriate damage deck. A 0 damage card equals No Effect and any other result equals Target Destroyed. Strafing planes cannot do consecutive strafing shots; there must be one maneuver card played between strafing shots.

    Victory Points:
    3 points – given to a pilot who shoots down an airborne enemy plane. Damaging a plane without destroying it yields no points.

    1 point – per surviving target awarded to each surviving German player

    1 point – per destroyed target awarded to each surviving British player

    Scenario #2; Save that Spy! – 20 Turns maximum
    Situation; March 1918
    A well placed British spy has critical information on German positions near the front lines. It is vital that the spy be brought back to report the information he has which will lead to the disruption of the German positions in this area. A two-seater plane will be escorted to the pick up point, land in order to retrieve the spy and then return him to friendly lines. The spy will be able to point out other targets of opportunity that enterprising pilots may be able to strafe prior to their return to base.

    Planes: Albatross DVa and PFlaz DIII will face Sopwith Triplanes and Spad XIII. British Spy Plane is one DeHavilland DH4.

    Special Scenario Rules:
    There are 3 targets on the map; the pick up point for the waiting spy, a command post and a telegraph station. Once the spy is airborne, British planes may strafe the command post and/or telegraph station using the same strafing rules found in Scenario #1.

    To pick up the spy, the DH4 must finish its movement in the pick up zone after completing two consecutive stall maneuvers (this is the only time double stalls are permitted). Once safely on the ground, the spy plane must wait three card plays while the spy boards the aircraft – German aircraft may not attack the DH4 while it is on the ground during this time. After maneuvers for the third card play have been completed, the DH4 may then take off, in any direction it chooses, by selecting for its first 2 cards, straight maneuver cards for movement and German pilots are free to shoot at it.

    Prior to picking up the spy, the DH4’s rear gun is non-functional. When the spy is onboard and uninjured, he may fire the rear gun. An Observer Casualty special damage means the spy can no longer fire the rear MG. Further Observer Casualties have No Effect.

    Victory Points:
    3 points – given to a pilot who shoots down an airborne enemy plane. Damaging a plane without destroying it yields no points.

    4 points – to each surviving German pilot if the DH4 is shot down while the spy is onboard

    2 points – to each surviving German pilot if the DH4 is shot down before picking up the spy

    4 points – to each surviving British pilot if the DH4 flies off the edge it started at with the spy onboard

    1 point – per destroyed target awarded to each surviving British player

    1 point – per surviving target awarded to each surviving German player

    Damage Differentials;
    At the end of each scenario, all pilots will provide the GM with the differential between how many damage points their plane can take and how many points their plane actually did take during combat. A running total will be kept and will only be used to break a tie between the two highest scoring pilots at the end of the three scenarios. The pilot with the greatest differential between two tied players will be Top Ace. If there is still a tie, then a final aerial duel will be flown to determine the Victor!

    Tournament Rules in play;
    1. Damage Cards will remain secret as per the Standard Rules. The explosion cards will be part of the Damage Deck but will act as a 5pt damage card along with the Fire special damage result. Damage Wheels will be provided to all pilots to record their damage points. When a damage card is drawn, the pilot of the damaged plane will log the points on his wheel and then return the damage card to the discard pile, face down. Special damage tokens will be used as per normal.

    2. No Communication between pilots. To represent that communication between planes was extremely difficult, pilots are not permitted to discuss tactics and any matter that involves co-operative play during a mission – this includes “hint” and gestures. Once pilots have been briefed by their Squadron Commander before the mission, they are on their own!

    3. The following “Optional Rules” are in effect – see “Burning Drachens” rulebook for the following rules;
    • Special Damage
    • Aim
    • Tailing
    • Shoot at the base (damage will be taken if the range stick, starting at the front of the shooting plane’s base, touches the enemy’s aircraft base, not the aircraft model. ).

    4. Altitude Rules will not be used.

    The TABS WoW tourney was well attended, with 12 combattants taking the the skies, with a full range of experience from seasoned vet to complete rookies... I'm hoping the ref will have pics posted shortly! As well, I heard rumblings of another tourney forming up sometime this summer in SW Ontario... and there seems to be some interest in the KW/Guelph area as well...

    All,

    I had a great time running this tournament and hope that everyone who came out had fun too! There were even a few pilots who played the game for the first time but were in the middle of the action almost from the get-go.

    And now, for some pics of the event.

    After a successful pick up, the spyplane and its valuable passenger make it home to report to GHQ

    Another tight fight for top ace; 3rd place was Spondulix (last year's Top Ace) with 9 points. Peet came in 2nd with 12 points and our 2012 Top Ace narrowly clinches it with 13 points: Tylex!

    Congrats to all players and again, thank you for playing in the tourney. I also want to give special thanks to those few who were able to offer supplies for all the attendees; Chris, Clint, Evan, Paul and Robert - couldn't have done it without you and your generosity fellas.

    See everyone at next year's tournament where we will see The Giants in action!

    Best,
    DB

    Thanks! This is my second year running the WoW/WoG tournament at TABS and the boys really enjoy it. Fellow Aerodrome member Canuck and I want to develop a formal set of tournament rules for the Canadian Wing so there can be a standard for all of us to use at future events. I havent explored this site enough to know if such a thing exists but my guess is that there are a bunch of house rules that might make sense to incorporate into a tournament rules set.

    Hello,

    Currently I'm not a member of TABs but was considering it. Are there many WoW/WoG players in TABS and do you run regular gaming nights for it.
