Thread: Decals for 10 Squadron RNAS, B and C flights

  1. #1

Default Decals for 10 Squadron RNAS, B and C flights

Latest from 1/144Direct on ebay decals for 10 Squadron RNAS, B and C flights.

There are two sheets available, featuring the markings of 10 Squadron RNAS, B and C flights. Each sheet includes all decals necessary to complete 5 aircraft from each flight, including wheel hub patterns and pilot's mounting foot holes.

Couldnt post an image from ebay but this gives an idea of what a B flight plane looks like, C flight is the same but with blue stripes and a big 'C'

I think I will hang on for the Oberst's set as I have a lot of other fish to fry at the moment, but thanks for the heads up anyway Don.

    How is this for Necromancy?

I now have the decals for B Flight, but apart from the picture here and one in the Sopwith Camel Aces book which happens to be the same aircraft as does the one on Palette, I have no info about the rest of the Flight and some very interesting extra bits of decaling which don't seem to be needed.
Has anyone pictures either of aircraft they have done for Naval Ten or information about who the rest of the pilots were?
i would be most grateful for any help before I make a total pig's ear of it.

Naval Aces of WW1 shows a b/w shot of Camel B6299 above - mount of Flt Lt Norman M Macgregor. Further on is a pic of the crash of Flt sub Lt Frank Booth's red & white striped B flight Camel B5658.
A mention in the text "On the 10th [Dec '17] Macgregor and Fit Sub-Lt John G Clark of 'Naval 10' claimed an Albatros in flames,.." would suggest Clark was in B flight, at least until the 12th when he was shot down..no idea of the aircraft number. Mentions also Flt Lt J G Manuel took over B flight at some point.

You'd have better luck with A flight with the black and white stripes as there is a photo caption: "These five Camels, with black and white stripes, were assigned to 'Naval 10's' 'A' Flight at Teteghem shortly after Christmas 1917. Furthest from the camera is B6289, flown by Fit Sub-Lt Harold L Nelson, then B5663 of Fit Lt Wilfred A Curtis, B3869 of Fit Sub-Lt Sydney K F P Humphrey, B6320 of Fit Sub-Lt Frederick V Hall and B6225 of Fit Sub-Lt Kenneth V Stratton".... !

    Thanks for the info Dave.
Unfortunately the decals I have are for B flight.
I may well copy them and alter the colour to get A Flight in the future, but the info about Pilots is very useful as I have the Aces book.
    Thanks.

Do your decals have serial numbers for the planes? If so I can look up the pilots for you.

I figure this thread is a good place to mention I actually purchased a set of C flight decals, with the original intention of creating a pair of C Flight planes. But after working on the first one, I came to the conclusion that the different planes in each flight are too indistinct for convenient table-top use. Pairing a B Flight plane would work far better for game purposes. So I still have a sheet with at least 2 good planes on it, and I'd be interested in exchanging it for a decal sheet with at least 2 good planes worth of B flight decals (so I have spares when I screw up a decal). If anyone else is in a similar position, PM me (preferably domestic USA). FWIW I'm least interested in the turtle-deck painted Flight Leader plane.

ALSO, just FYI, the wheel decals for these sheets are sized for the original Nexus models, and are too large for the Ares reprints.

I must admit, I thought Matt added a list of the known pilots with the decal sheet.
Im pretty sure I got a book about naval 10 Ill see what it has to say.

He lists three pilots for each sheet on the web page:

    B6358 – Flt/Cdr. LP Coombes - wheel hub: 2 blue circles

    Sheet YK-45-2 : 10 RNAS - B flight

    Aces include:

B6211 – FSL. HB Maund – wheel hub: all white

Other serial numbers were chosen at random to enable larger flights for war-gaming.
But without knowing his sources, a little poking around caused me to think that his listing for C flight at least was a little suspect...

I'll look them up at the weekend Rob. I'm going to visit my brother on Saturday and he has the Camel file so I'll get the history of each of them.
