Thread: British insignia blue question

  1. #1

    Default British insignia blue question

I've been looking at decal sets from different manufacturers and noticed that some sheets have a dark blue in the rondels and others have a lighter blue.
Which is proper? Or are they both proper?

    ON,
It depends a little as to how blue you mean, but as a generalisation, darker is more accurate than lighter. For example, the shade of blue on your avatar SE5a is a little too light (although paint and dope would fade over time), while the blue in your US flag is probably as dark as you should go. Hope this helps,

Also, I don't remember where I read it, but the time during the war that the markings were applied will play an effect on the blue used. I'm pretty sure that later in the war the blue was slightly different. I think I found this info on a forum when searching for the actual colors for the red and blue used in the roundels. Also note that the blues between WWI and WWII were different.

I had been wondering this exact same thing about a set of French roundels I bought. Thanks for the info guys!

I do know that the French insignia blue is a light blue.
