Written in a similar format to Peter Hart's books, making good use of contemporary diaries and recollections, in 371pp Levine provides an easily-readable account of WWI in the air; concentrating on British and German activity on the Western Front. As you'd expect from a book covering such a timespan, it moves along at a fair clip, but still takes the time to dive into individual encounters. Very much about the aircrew and flying rather than the machines and the events, it is an affectionate tribute to 'The First'.
