For me it has to be the colonial era with the Afghan wars and the wars against the Zulus, I still have all the hairs on my neck stand up when I hear 'Men of Harlech' Perhaps its just the overwhelming sense of Britishness, or perhaps I have just read to many Flashmans and watched Zulu too many times.

Interesting poll. Definitely WWII for me. History of this war was always present at my home. I read many books, my father always was encouraging me to read and discuss many battles and campaigns. Even today, he is 72, me 45 and I often buy WWII books which he reads first (I got no time!) then I house them in my library and read them... It's still a great time for us

I have read the poll options once more and i miss one spectacular period: ACW - I think it deserves a separate option. Besides WWII it's the most inspiring war I am fond of. Not many wars of that time are so well documented and interesting (and not one of them spanned for 5 years!) -I mean Italian war of independence, Crimean War or the Franco-Prussian war 1870-71. I'm about to read J. and M. Shara's trilogy puiblished recently in Polish. Not to mention the well known movies ( G. and G&G) that I know almost by heart.

That would be interesting! Share it with us. There was no war on this territory for 200 years if I'm correct. Do you mean 1812? If I remember well, I played Columbia Games 1812 with some events out there...

Mostly a mood thing. Ask me again tomorrow and I'll vote something else.

Today, I voted dark ages - Not exactly favorite (wouldn't want to live there), but very interesting. Lots of stuff going on then that laid the base for quite a lot of other stuff, going all the way into the present.

It is a very interesting period, Attilio.
Turkey is an ascending power even nowadays.
I read a fantastic book by George Friedmann "The Next 100 Years". Turkey plays a hell of a role there. Highly recommended.

    Rome,
    Dark Ages,
    Mongols,
    Medieval Japan,
    Arabic Invasions,
    100 Years War,
    Napoleonics,
    Naval engagements in Napoleonic Wars

I love history in general but stand out periods for me are the end of the Dark Ages, then through the medieval period - especially 100 years war - ending (for me) with the Battle of Bosworth; I am pro Richard III despite all the Tudor propaganda shovelled down our throats growing up and schooling in England (sorry, I'll get my coat.)

Recently British colonial history has began to appeal since moving to NZ.

My favourite period has to be the one that I have been re-enacting for 20 years and wargaming for slightly longer. The English Civil war.
Next, My second re-enactment period. 15 years of The Wars of the Roses. Then my other re-enactment period, the 18th century Lace Wars culminating in The American Revolution, which was my main wargames army for many years. I also have a love of the American Civil War and a vast 15mm Army in that period too.

It's a great way to explore a time period you love, that's for sure. And reenacting a time period you love sure beats reenacting one because "everyone else is doing that period."

I picked Other, because I didn't see my favorite on the list. In these parts we refer to "The Big 18th Century" which is a vague period covering roughly late 1600s to early 1800s. It might be equivalent to the "Period of Big Wigs and Hats" or "The Flintlock Era". I guess it all depends upon how one feels about the 18teens. My particular specialties within that time frame are 1680s and 17teens - buccaneers and pirates.

Next on my list would be Imperial Rome, followed by the Dark Ages. I also find the An Lushan Rebellion to be a fascinating period.

Yep, tricornes do it for me too! The War of the Austrian Succession through to the end of the Seven Years War is the first 'global' conflict, with great uniforms, evolving tactics and some very interesting geopolitical considerations.

A difficult choice so many periods that are interesting
I went for The Renaissance (Europe, 14th century - 16th century) in the end as that covers the late medieval (Wars of the Roses) and Anglo/Scottish Border Reivers which are my current interests.

I also like the Fremen rebellion. That was a great conflict of wits vs. overwhelming power.

Actually Max the original Battlelore was set in the 100 years war, you dont have to add the goblins and silly things just get the heroes and knights, system is ok , can be very one sided if you dont get the cards

Haaa! A man after my own heart.
I learnt more about British History from Flashman books than I ever did at School.

I also watch Zulu at regular intivals.

However I voted Napoleonic due to Richard Sharpe & the 95th Rifles.
Got all the books & DVD plus the Sharpe Companions & a few books on the 95th & Wellingtons Peninsular Campains plus most of Alexander Kent's Richard Bolitho books.
What a shame they never made a TV series from those!

Must admit to a great interest in the American Civil War. I have lots of books on it plus the series of DVD's with the reinactments from first Bull Run to Appomattox. Also the DVDs, Glory, Gettysberg, Gods & Generals, the Last Confederate ( Not the last Widow one! lol!) & of course Gone with the Wind.

Do you know, that the Town Hall in my home town, Opole, was built to resemble (a bit) your famous Palazzo Vecchio? Have a look at it's recent shape reconstructed in thirties, XX:
