Thread: Sopwith Triplane paint job

    Default Sopwith Triplane paint job

Here is my attempt at a kampflieger (WSF) Sopwith Triplane. I based the paint job on a pic found in Ospreys Sopwith Triplane Aces of WW1 - serial N5336 of A flight 10 Naval squadron in summer 1917.

check out the album if the image is not available http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/album.php?albumid=1047

I gave it a couple of coats of Humbrol varnish to seal it and to alleviate the rough surface (not overly successful!) I then painted it with white Humbrol acrylic as an undercoat onto which was added Humbrol 155 Olive Green enamel as PC10 and GW Bleached bone for the undersides. The metal looking bits are Humbrol acrylic 56 and the cowling, wheels & tail plane are GW Go Fasta Red.
I finally added some of Doms decals and a Peter Pig pilot to finish off.
I was fairly pleased as it didn't look too rough in the end and at playing distance it looks fine and ok in blurry photos !!

Thanks Chris - being laid up for the weekend has had some benefits - now I have to finish off the Pup.

    Nice one Dave!

Tip for the album: Also show some of the underside. Us hobby enthusiast like to see as much as possible - And it can be useful to others who'd like to paint the same plane.

A very neat piece of work Dave. My Reviresco Tripe was the first model I did and is now looking a bit tired alongside my more recent ones. Your model has inspired me and it may now be time for a revamp of the old bus.

Many thanks chaps, you have all inspired me with your own works and it's nice to be able to join in for a change. Know what you mean Rob, it blows my Skytrex model away (but then I had to build that one!).

Looks good to me. Hell, it looks great! That's a great representation of a Tripe if I've ever seen it. Nice job.

Nicely done, Dave. Just received two tripes myself, so thanks for the pictures, looking forward to painting them.

As for the rough finish, looks pretty smooth to me from here ... I am using somewhat diluted PVA glue with success. It's a messy job, but two coats of thinly and patiently painted stuff nicely smooths the surfaces

Yeah I tried that on my Albatros Jure but it was too thin I think, however, by the time the paint and Matt cote have been applied they are pretty smooth so worked out OK. I will post pics of that when I get the decals on it - just waiting for them to be delivered.
