Thread: The D.III Challenge!

I can see again! Miracle! Noël, noël!

Concerning the deadline, how about splitting the apple in half? Mid-February?
That's two more weeks for the rich people who can go to far away places instead of hunkering down in their basement to build miniature flying machines...
(and I don't want to wait any longer to get MY prize!)

5 or 12th of Feb.2012, if you please. That's because of the winter holidays that end on 29th of Jan and ... Dom's decals usual delay (I've ordered a set of sheets recently but it usually takes 5-6 weeks of delivery time).
Above all, the more time the greater number of repaints you can get.
    Andrzej.

12th of February... hmm... I think I'm out of the required decals, but given that span of time, I might be able to procure some by then.

Just a quick note, as I don't really post here any more (actually I don't think I've even logged in for 6 months....), but someone said I should take a look at this thread. My turnaround's generally been decidedly slow (typically 2-3 weeks, which I'm not at all happy about) over the last few months, as my health has been very poor (bronchitis) since early September. It's finally been rather improving over the last 3 weeks or so, and coupled with December usually being a quiet month for my business, I'm now nearly fully up to date with mail order, which I hope will continue to be the case in 2012. (With the caveat that the WWI decals, especially British with their horrible narrow white borders, are by far the most awkward range I have to print, so occasional delays will doubtless still happen - the only way I can avoid that completely is to stop producing that range, which may be worth a thought if my reputation's truly this awful now....)

As for Andrzej's specific "still waiting" - your order was posted before Christmas, having been placed on December 18th - given that the last posting date for Air Mail to reach Poland by Christmas was 9th December, 9 days before you placed your order, I can't help feeling a little put out by your post; apologies if I'm overly defensive, but there is absolutely no way that order could be with you by now, short of using a £40 courier service to ship £6 of decals....

No intention of abuse, Dominic. That didn't mean I'm waiting and am upset for this. Just "can't wait" to get them I do admire the quality of products and service - no word about it. For some things people should wait and that's all. If you felt uncomfortably, I'm sorry - and please accept my apology.

His plane, while overall red, had "Brumowski spirals" in mustard painted on it. .
Hmmm.... in 1/144 maybe a stipple brush might work?
Spirals are probably to small to show up as spirals so you might get away with blobs.

Dom, its high time someone made you aware of the quaulity of your decals. I for one, overly abuse them during placement and they still look great despite my ham-fisted efforts. Other decals come apart or the ink smears when wet. Yours are by far the best in quality that I have come across. You should be ashamed of yourself for even considering reducing the quantity or variety of high-quality decals you offer. Consider yourself duly admonshed! (tongue firmly planted in cheek!)

I wish you a speedy recovery.

I am sorry to hear about your health problems Dom. After a bout of pneumonia when I was 36 I had bad Bronchitis every Autumn for about ten years so I can feel for you. As far as the not posting on the Drome is concerned I am sorry to hear that as your huge store of knowledge will be sadly missed by us.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Dom - please get well soon, and I don't just mean because so many people love your products.
Also, try not to stress. If there's anything anyone can do to help, please let me know.

I produce my own home-made decals. They're not remotely as good as yours, but they'll do. I know just how hard it can be to get that last 5% in quality. I don't bother, because I'm an amateur. You're a professional, and from all accounts, literally the best in the business. I'm good with 95%, others accept 99%, with you it's 100%. Something you should be proud of.

We have some idea that you've had serious health issues. You have to look out for yourself first, anyone who doesn't understand that is being unreasonable. The people here aren't complaining about that, it's the rotten postal service some of them have to put up with, and the fact that your product is so much better than any other, it's worth waiting for, you understand?

Best wishes for a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year,
    Zoe

p.s. Brumowski Spirals.... I'm not sure even you could do those in 1/144...300 dpi is not nearly fine enough, and I don't think 600 is adequate either.

I'd like to thank Dominic (Dom's Decals) here for a superfast and quality service. The decals have just arrived arrived today after two weeks including X-mas time.
Knowing the problems he faces (My thoughts are with you, D.) this is something we must take into consideration.

Depends entirely on the specific D.III you are modeling.
Earlier D.III`s had the radiator mounted in the central part of the top wing but on later production versions this was ofset to the right as it was on the D.V.
Some later production D.III`s also had a more D.V shaped rudder.
And, as has been previously mentioned the Austro-Hungarian versions had further modifications.
As with any model its a good idea to get as many pics and photos of the subject as you can before starting, with WWI aircraft there were just so many `oddball` variations of a basic design which come under the same basic classification.

    Thanks Robert!

But what then tells me if a particular plane is early or late: Date of use, serial number, something else?

Some craft I've had trouble finding reliable pics of, such as Noth's spotted one.

The D.IIIs with the D.V/Va 'rounded' rudder are actually those built by the Ostdeutsche Albatros Werke (OAW) in Schneidemuhl rather than the parent company. They were a later production run than those produced at Johannisthal, whcih switched to producing the D.V. Additionally, Albatros-built fighters had a bowl-shaped metal cover over the MG discharge chute (on the port side) while OAW used a curved, rectangular chute. OAW D.IIIs all had offset wing-mounted radiators.

How do you put pictures in a PM?

  31. #81

    Default

All entries must be PM'ed to Oberst Hajj with the following information:

    Real name
    Username
    What miniature was used
Pilot and Unit name (if based on historical scheme)
    No more than 3 photos
All photos need to be jpg format and uploaded to one of your private Albums.
The red part is the important part. Once you do that, you can include them in the PM just as you would in a normal post.

  32. #82

    Default

Normally I use the attach icon, the little paper clip, which is not in the PM, so I have made a new album and put the photos in there, hope that's right.

I have tried to send the pictures by PM to you in BB code but all I get is the red X. I can load one using the URL but even then don't understand how to get more than one picture into the e-mail.
