Default New Videos of WW1 Aircraft

    Hi all,

    Sopwith F.1 Camel

Avro 504k and Royal Aircraft Factory BE.2c (Air-to-air)

That's really cool Allan! I've never actually witnessed a WWI plane in the air and never realised how slow they actually go... Good stuff mate!

Thanks Allan, it's easy to forget how small and fragile they were until you see footage like this.

Pfalz D.III: Here's the latest WW1 aircraft video -- or at least our latest upload. This video is a few years old now (have just dug it out of our archive), and the quality isn't all that flash, but it's one of the few videos we have of the 'Blue Max' Pfalz D.III in the air.

As an aside, what's the general feeling -- are you happy for me to keep on posting links in this forum to the new WW1 aircraft videos as we upload them? Or do you feel that this is extraneous noise?

    Cheers

What we really need is all this archive material from all sources collated and put into a sticky on the History Forum so that it is easy for all to find.

The video of the Be2c is very interesting considering the thread ongoing about the Observers firing arcs. It is just a pity that the plane was not flying with an observer. A very instructive example nevertheless. Thanks once again Allan.

I'd suggest that those of you who like these video should keep an eye on this thread (maybe even bookmark it), as we have some really interesting stuff coming over the next few weeks ....

... as a teaser take a look at this FaceBook page:

    The Vintage Aviator

And while I'm not allowed to say any more just at the moment, I can say, what you're seeing here is not all that's coming to a screen near you soon.... :-)

Sure but they don't sound like rotary engines Look at the cylinders. They don`t move with the propeller.

I really enjoyed that one Allan. But then I am in the middle of my Italian wing building phase, so I'm bound to love that bird.
    Thanks.

The first footage was particularly interesting to me. The reason will be revealed later this week.

This week it's the Sopwith Snipe! Yes, you heard (read) right, it's a real Snipe flying with an original 230hp Bentley BR.2 rotary engine. :-)

This aircraft has been recently completed by The Vintage Aviator Ltd in New Zealand. This video shows the aircrafts first, and only public display in NZ -- shortly the aircraft will be shipped off to Florida to join Kermit Weeks' Flight of Fantasy collection.

In a few weeks we'll probably have another couple of Snipe videos to share with you as well once we edit up some of the other material from the same shoot.

This week it's an older video from our archives, a display of TVAL's rotary-powered Sopwith Camel. Watch until the end to see the sideslip landing -- it's cool!

    Great Allan. Keep em coming.
That Fokker emerging so suddenly gave me a suprise. Was the Sopwiths engine O.K.? It seemed to be blipping rather a lot, and there was some nasty smoke when it landed.

    Rob.
No, the engine was perfectly fine. The video illustrates a normal amount of blipping for that aircraft when it flies a low level airshow display, and the amount of smoke you see is also pretty normal.
