Yeah, this one was hard for me as well. The B-24 and B-25 were very significant in the war and the B-17 is just iconic.

This is a real tough one, but the B-17 won it for me.

The B-25 Mitchell. Its an excellent light bomber and was in that movie Catch 22.

Hard to chosse... depend the campaing... B-17 was more used in the Europe theater and B-24 in Pacific war... anyone would be ok (better the two). Random makes me choose B-24.

I chose the B17, my uncle was a radioman in one, it is my all time favorite bomber. He only just started talking about his experiances.

The B17 and the B24 flew in both theaters. The B17 outnumbered the B24 in Europe, and the B24 outnumbered the B17 in the Pacific. B25's flew in both and would make for a good game, down in the weeds with gun nose blazing.

Agian the Mitchell swings it on versatility. You'd use it more.

    B-17 get's my vote.
The B-17's incredible capacity to take it -- to come flying home on three, two, even one engine, sieve-like with flak and bullet holes, with large sections of wing or tail surfaces shot away -- has been so widely publicized that U. S. fighting men could afford to joke about it.

The ground crew looked up and saw, coming down for a landing, not the Flying Fortress, but a lone motor. Sitting on the motor was a sergeant with a machine gun across his lap. He brought the motor down to a beautiful no-point landing, jumped off, "Boy," he said, "were we in a fight!" - Yank: The Army Weekly

Hard choice to make, B25 would be more versatile as a game piece but I think a flight of B17's would end up seeing more game time at my place, especially if we get Fw190's

The B-24...Again hands down the best U.S. Bomber of WWII. Served in every theater, than the B-17: Had a larger bomb load and longer range than the B-17.
If the B-29 would have been in the war longer, might have had to vote for it for sheer "BetterBomber" of WWII, but i dearly love the Liberator.

B-17 is iconic, but for me the B-24 Mitchell is the prime attraction because of Ambrose's book "The Wild Blue."

I feel bad for voting for the B-17, but it was heavily used and great plane.

Man, I really feel sorry for whoever wanted the B-29, that would have been my second choice though.

I have all of these in 1/144 scale plastic. I need the WoW stands for them now...HINT HINT!!

I like the B24 more than the B17. I feel that as a bomber it was under-rated

I voted for the B-25 because of Catch-22 also, but the novel, not the movie.

B-24! I had a great uncle who was a gunner on the Ploesti Raid, though he and his plane did not make it back.

Right now I am putting together a B-17 I finally found on ebay for a good price, and looking forward to running some 109's against it. Looks like I am in need of one of your stands Colonel!

B-17 all the way. I couldn't wait and made my own miniature. Academy sells a nice 1/200th model that can be easily made to fit on WoW stands.

The B-17 is indeed iconic. But which version are we talking about, the E,F or G. You could use the same plane for the E and F model but would need a different model for the G with the chin turret.

B17 - as it always springs to my mind when I hear people talking of WW2 US bombers and after a Lancaster was the second large model kit I built as a child.

    Why?

I chose the B-29 as I knew the other three choices would win out anyway, plus my father flew them in Korea. In all honesty I would like to see them all released as mini's. Put that in your bomb bay!

Here you have the prototype for Doolittle's B-25B:

This is the album (if you are registered to the WoW Yahoo Discussion Group) where you can see the other B-25 (a B-25C from Operation Torch) and one of the two He.111:

Would the Doolittle raid really be a good scenario? Surely the bombers just flew in at low level and bombed targets. If they met any fighters, they only carried three machine guns, two .50 calibres in the top turret and one .30 calibre in the nose, so they would stand little chance.

Voted for the B-17 even tho its a toss-up between it and the B-24. More 24's were built and saw service but th 17-s ability to with stand damage was legendary. 17 pilots used to say the best escorts they ever had were when 24's were in the air close-by. The Luftwaffe preferred the 24 as a target over the 17

Apparently this was due to the high aspect:ratio wing of the Liberator - much better for lower altitudes. In the rarified air of 33000 ft the Lib would wobble about something chronic making formation flying nerve-wracking and exhausting. The Fort was just better in the environment it was designed for.
