Thread: How do you display your minis?

  1. #1

Question How do you display your minis?

How do you choose to display your minis? Do you prefer to show them off, or would you rather they be tucked safely away in their storage hangars? Everyone has a different method of managing their planes; what's yours?

For those that are curious, here is how I show off my planes (they're always a conversation starter!):

Forgot to mention Lugz that I really like how you've chosen to display your collection.

I would love to have a glass display case to show off my WoW stuff someday. It'll have to wait to I'm somewhere more permanent.

I keep everything in plastic storage boxes with a non slip drawer liner. The mini's and their maneuver decks are bundled together using Hugo's Amazing Tape.

I do the same thing with the cards, but I want different solution. I am thinking about finding a box that holds a ton of business cards, that way I can index them for easier retrieval.

I do the same thing using the KR multicase system.

One thing I think is a bad idea is using the original boxes, the internal plastic inserts are just too rigid to repeatedly remove the models and replace them without eventually causing damage.
Ok if you`r just displaying them, not so good if you`r using them a lot.

I also use the K&R multicase system... I think this ( and all similar systems for that matter) is the easiest way to safeguard your mini's from all eventual disasters ...

Developed my own systen of making up foam lined boxes for the aircraft and a seperate box for the cards and stands and a WoW box for the damage cards and markers which go into a 60 liter storage box. Sounds clumbersome, but its the protection of the miniatures that counts.

For now they're all on display in my room, but as I'm starting to get more models (a whole heap landing next week), I'll definetly opt for those fine looking foam trays from the Aerodrome Accessories.

    Cheers!

I will certainly agree that the original Wings of War boxes are a bit fickle about yielding their tiny planes when you first get them. However, I've made it a point to use a small flat-head screw driver and press in the little white plastic bumps that hold the wings in place. After depressing the raised sections of the insert, the planes slip in and out very easily.

As you can see, I choose to show off the minis in my living room display case. We usually play on the dining room table, so they don't have to travel far from "storage" to the gaming table. Where the cards are concerned, I still keep these in the white plastic inserts that came with the original Wings of War boxes. I have attached a mylar card sleeve to the face of each box using double sided tape (adhered to the plastic "window"; not the cardboard), and I use this to hold the plane's pilot card. This way I can see at a glance which box holds which deck for every pilot. When I want to travel with large numbers of planes, I simply restore each plane to its original box. I then place these in another larger box with a handle that I can cart around. If I'm headed over to someone's house and will only be needed 4 planes at the most, I just take my Deluxe Edition box with me (along with the corresponding Fokker, Albatros, SPAD, and Camel).

Of course mine are displayed. I dont want them "locked away". They found a nice home at my bookshelf - even when Im beginning to run out of space since my latest 2-seaters arrived. But honestly I prefer having problems displaying them instead of having problems obtaining them

    Lightbulb Floating Drachens!

After adding a few new planes to my collection, it quickly became apparent that I had run out of room for my observation balloons! My wife, the brilliant woman that she is, suggested that I suspend them above my planes using nylon filament and suction cups. Each "shelf" in my display case is made of glass, so the suction cup idea was perfect. I ended up using a set of cups with built in metal hooks — like the kind you use to hang christmas decorations from a windowpane. Check out the results:

I used keep them all in their own seperate boxes but when numbers became too large I transferred them to the KR Multicase system.
This means I can carry loads of planes easily and safely, the problem now is I will soon have to get a third mutlcase.
I might organise them by their years of operation more rather than nationality as I do at present, so if we have an late war scenario I just have to take one or two boxes.
I don't display my planes for three reasons, space, dust and last but not least SWMBO.

@ Rob:I will be sure to do that
Since the shelf directly above my planes is made of a much heavier tempered glass, it supports the weight of the balloons without a problem. The hardest part was knotting the filament harnesses for each balloon at the same length! I made two loops with a Surgeon's End Loop, and then melted the two tailing ends together with a small butane lighter. Each loop slips over one end of the balloons, and the point where the filament got fused is fed over the suction cup hook up above. You can see a (small) picture of my good lady wife below.

@ Burt (Don): I totally understand how you feel about dust. It is for this reason alone that I insist on having bookshelves with glass doors. I cannot abide dusting off my precious collectibles, not to mention the fact that prolonged dust can have adverse effects on the quality of certain materials. Here is a shot of the wall opposite that display case (note the glass doors on the bookcases) DUST = THE ENEMY!

The ones I play are in the Obersts foam hangers. The rest are stored in a safe environment in an underground bunker, deep within a nondescript building. Away from prying eyes and temptation. Protected, 24/7, by my private security firm, Kimber, Ruger, Remington, Colt, Smith & Wesson!

    Anybody feel lucky?

Ours stay safe in their boxes, inside of special drawers just for WOW stuff. Not sure I'd display them if even if I had the room, as I figure something would go wrong if I did.

Well, your question dear Lugz suggests that we DISPLAY our beloved minis (you made an excellent display, Keegan, bravo to your wife!). It may be true for most of you, chaps, but I just STORE them, tightly (but safely) packed. Since I play in at least two different places, I must carry them with me, while normally they are shelved in my gaming room among other games. So - below you can see (I hope you can!) 20 DoW and 34 WoW minis. The rest of the game stuff is packed in game boxes without inserts.

Displaying them would mean packing them up every time I wanted to play

Foam trays in a nice carrier bag that takes all. Display shelf? Would love to but swmbo would start asking awkward questions and for the fact I would have to pack them all to travel to the club.

I use GW boxes: I had the small one, but, when I started to collect WII minis too, I had to buy the biggest one because I hadn't all the space needed. Now, with the new models I think I'll use the small one for the WWI minis and the biggest one for WWII models (more bombers=more space needed).
If you check my albums you'll see the first solution I had.

I use the KR cases and a swiss gear bag to haul them in. I have 4 of the KR cases with different foam in them (Entente fighters in one, Central power fighters in one, Balloons, Bombers, 2-seaters, and game info in the other two). They really work great for storing and hauling them.

I'm afraid I have mine packed for travel - at more than 300 miniatures now I have too many to comfortably display them.

I keep my WW2 aircraft in their boxes but the WW1 versions are in plastic trays - I find it causes too much damage to keep taking them out of their original boxes.

I store my WoW and WoG planes in their original boxes and my Shapeways, Reviresco & F-Toys on a shelf in my wargames cabinet. None of them are really what I would cal... "on display". Too bad, they really should be.

Although I like Obersts foam hangers.....I am too far into the KR Multicase foam trays to switch. I also use a KR transport bag....will have to get another one soon.

Good thing about the transport bags is that if you strategically place it in your house you can grab it quickly on your way out the door if your house catches on fire.

ive got a few in the display case at the store but most reside in their original boxes. theyd look grand all set up on display but i demo the game and play them a lot at the store so its not feasible to be setting them up and packing them up all the time.

I keep mine in fishing tackle boxes and those are stored on a shelf, so the planes are never on display but only come out when they are being used. The tackle boxes are transparent so its easy to see whats inside without actually opening the box.

I have a bookshelf unit with glass shelves that I keep the planes I painted. All the bought ones sadly are kept in the original boxes. That will change in the near future...I hope. Still have to come up with a better way for them to travel to conventions.

The time has come to show my brutal and barbarian, but supersafe storage solution. I keep all my planes (hundreds) in plastic organizers (boxes) like these below.
The minis are not DISPLAYED and rather compacted, but with tons of games in my gaming room I have no chance to display them. They are stored with cards put right behind them. The decks are sorted and placed in another boxes like that. I travelled with those boxes many times and the models survived. The boxes are cheap and sturdy. And the most important feature: saving space. In the box below I store ... 47 minis.

Frankly, I remember only one propeller blade broken in years (but it can happen during any game as well). Superglue helped. You can place one box over another, put them in a suitcase, take to a plane to ORIGINS or Prague and they are fine

How do I store them? I got the hanger trays from here and store them in a large ZipLoc container from Office Depot.

How do I display them? Well right now they are all in the trays and put away. My wife likes it when I put them in a cabinet/deck we have. It is two shelves behind glass and she likes me to put some of my miniatures there. The Giants with a couple of small planes are really good. Otherwise several small planes or I just switch it up with Star Wars stuff.
