That was an excellent evening. Looking forward to the December meet!
That was an excellent evening. Looking forward to the December meet!
I'll try (again) to get more of my usual gang to show.
If you'd like, I can bring my stuff for Hajj's train scenario. Of all the scenarios I have played, I found that one to be one of the most fun.
We played it with more folks then were at the las game IIRC, and it went pretty well.
Yep, we played it with ~10, but I believe it was orginally designed for a smaller group. You can find it here: http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/dow...p?do=cat&id=13
Ok, I've created an open event on Facebook and asked 19 of my gamer friends. Hopefully we'll get one or two more people than last time around.
So, turns out I have a bit of a conflict on the 12th, and may be late, or not at all (hopefully it won't come to that).
John, can you cover?
Assuming my wife isn't delayed on her trip home from work I can cover the "being there" part of the show. As far as planes and cool stuff goes, you've got me beat by a long sea mile my friend. I'll bring what little I have in the way of boxed stuff and ask everyone else to do likewise just in case. Hope you can make it!
I plan to be there this time. Of course, I probably said that last time.
At the very least you did say that the time before last.
Fwiw, I'm on the game store's mail list, and they actually sent out an advert for Monday's WoW Night. I don't recall them doing that in the past.
Todd, if everyone who thinks they can show actually does show, I think we'll be okay for planes. But thanks for the offer, and I still hope you can make it.
Well done. It seems planes don't actually hit the table until 6:30 at the earliest, so maybe you won't miss much even if you get there at 7.
The train scenario is on page 24 of the Knights campaign book, though it doesn't say how many planes of what type to use. If you'd like, I'll go back and look at what we did when we played it before, and then we can tailor it however many we have.
With luck, we'll have six from the facebook invite. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping we have a good turnout.
At this point it looks good for me making it. I brought along my bag o'planes as well
Mike! Awesome! Looking forward to it!
At least one more person told me they'd show, so it's looking like a good half-dozen, maybe more. See you all sometime around 6pm.
Good times again lads! I'm looking forward to doing it again on 1/9/12?
Another great nite of flying at the family game store!
Todd - thanks for setting this up!
13 pilots this time! Sweet!
Talk about a fur ball!
Looking forward to Jan - which may be my last outing before Kid B is born and gaming takes a back seat to infant relates sleep dep.
Zach
Hmmm... I wonder if I know any gamers from Delaware?
I have said the last few times I would be there but alas never have shown up. Therefore no going next tim. Reverse logic.
Sent out an invite to my facebook friends - the same as last time, plus a few more, for a total of 25. Hopefully we'll get half of them.
One week to go. So far from my facebook invite there are six, including myself. One of those is a new guy, so maybe we'll have fourteen this time around!
Reminder - We'll have to have a second table ready to go for those who get shot down right away. No sense in anyone standing around waiting for half an hour plus to be able to play again.

You beat me to the punch on the one week notice.
Thoughts on scenarios this time? I had been thinking of a Balloon Barrage scenario, but those are kind of pointless without altitude. Also, since people (on here at least) seem to appreciate the squadrons taking flight, I thought we could have Ernst Udet's Jasta 37 intercept a couple of Breguets on a bombing misssion, escorted by the Lafayette Escadrille, but I can only handle up to 12 players with that one.
We did a balloon busting mission once without altitude and it was great fun. Each side had a balloon. The question became one of tactics - "protect your balloon" versus "all out attack". In fact, it was one of the most fun scenarios we've done.

Our last balloon scenario was played without altitude, using the rules in Burning Drachens (the ballon reaches ground level after 12 turns). As John said, these are fun scenarios even without the altitude rules in play.
And from a playing time perspective, we know the scenario will end in 12 turns, so it might work well in the limited time environment we have to play in.
John,
I was in on a shoot down the balloon mission at the game you hosted - great fun! I agree the 12 turn time limit will work well.
I was also hoping to do a bomber mission with scouts vs multi engine bombers. I do not have any large bomber models but I think I saw some flying in your basement.
Todd, how about you? Any large bomber models hidden in those boxes of yours?
Mike, glad you enjoyed the balloon mission. Whenever I ask people who've played in any of those games, the two that get most mention are the balloon mission and the blow up the train mission. Of the two, I liked the train better, but the train takes more set-up time than usual. As for bombers, no, I don't have any twin-engined bombers yet. The Gotha and the O/400 both belonged to Zach. We actually played two bomber scenarios at the game store back in... October? September? Fun, but bombers are very tough.

Balloon busting is fine, but a barrage is a whole different animal. It puts up a wall the bombers have to fly over. Give them a mission that has to be completed at low altitude, the scouts have to take out a balloon or strand the bombers on the other side for 10 turns or so while they climb back up.
I have a Caproni still awaiting squadron markings, and a Felixstowe and HP/400 en route, but I wouldn't expect to see them over the front any time soon.
Has anyone put together an artillery spotting scenario? You could either do a point per round loitering by the target, or roll for artillery each round; 6 to hit for the first shot, -1 per round spent near the target until it is hit. Or something along those lines anyway...
Sounds like a reason to buy more bombers! I have pre-ordered a Gotha, but I haven't ordered any from bombers Shapeways. I don't know what I was thinking when they had the end of 2011 sale. I gobbled up oddball planes, but only ordered one twin-engined plane (the Felixstowe). Doh!
Not that I know of, but it sounds like fun.
The official bombers will have everything you need to fly them... so no need for a 2nd copy of FoG with them.
Which is a brilliant move on Ares' part. I'm glad the thought of it, otherwise there would be much complaining.
Artilley spotting could be interesting. Would at least give a reason for a bunch of 2 seaters to be in the air. Maybe with some scouts as escort depending on the number of players. I like the idea of flying around a target card and rolling for hits. Say the observing aircraft has to stay within a ruler (or half ruler) distance to roll for hits. 5 damage points destroys the target. Now all we need are aerial photos of say bridges, buildings or trenches to use as targets!
And there is, of course, the Knights of the Air campaign.
I've posed the question to my facebook friends. Lets see who is willing.
From a players standpoint, there is not much more to do besides play the game by the normal rules. A few extra card draws at the end of the game and jotting down your achievements from the mission. Most of the "work" falls on the person running the campaign.
I'm more than willing to run it (especially since I'm not running an rpg at the moment) if I can gather enough players to make it interesting. That being said, maybe it's something more suitable to playing in the den in my home. It would give me plenty of time to set things up beforehand. Yeah... that sounds like a plan.
The missions take about 5 mins to setup... it's really just marking out "deployment zones" for most of them. I can email you an excel file that helps track the pilots if you like.
So long as I don't have to run it and it doesn't discourage "walk ins", it could be fun...
The system works really well for walk-ins and players that have to come and go though out the campaign.
Any more thoughts on missions? Might be good if we decide now & so we can set up right away. I like the balloon busting mission & a 2 seater mission. Either photo recon or artillery spotting. Would love to see the skies of the Family Game Store full of 2 seaters!
