Thread: Wings of Savage Mill (Maryland)

  1. #1

Default Wings of Savage Mill (Maryland)

There's been some expressed interest, but no definite plans to this point put forth for starting a regular Wings of War night at The Family Game Store in Savage Mill Maryland. So I thought I'd give it it's own thread to see if we can get a critical mass...

For starters, I'd like to try and put together a once-a-month night meetup. Right now, I just want to get some people out, and see where it goes. Once we get some regulars we can talk about things like house rules, campaigns, or weekly meetings, but I'm starting small, with current plans being once a month, and more "pickup" style play.

Mondays seem to be a good night for the store as well as a few others, so, please post if you would come to a Monday night Wings of War night.

Please sound off if you have an opinion on whether the first, last, or "other" Monday of the month would be better for you.

If there's something specific that you'd definitely want at the game night, or that would make the difference in attendance, speak up. (specific scenarios, or if miniatures are a must).

If I get a positive response, I think we can get an inaugural flight in to commemorat Bloody April...

    Personal preferences:

Mondays are promising. Which matters not (my school demands will determine my own attendance)

Miniatures please (along with the miniatures rules - pdf download).

As an SE5a pilot I think I resent the Bloody April Reference.

As an Albi DVa pilot I like it!

I'd consider it. Like Rocky, I vote for miniatures. I think the first Monday of the month is when our cub scout troop has its monthly planning meeting, so that would rule me out for that particular Monday.

Also, what time frame are you thinking of? If I can make it, I probably won't be able to get there until 6:30 or 7pm.

Depends on feedback, but I was figuring around 7:00 would be good time anyway...

Mondays are usually open for me, so I would make when I could.

Given advance warning, I'll advertise it to those facebook friends of mine who are gamers, but not part of our regular gaming group. At least two of them have a bunch of stuff (one has 19 planes) and a few others want to try it, but haven't been able to connect up with a game.

Well, I see there's been a lot of interest here in my absence (sorry, been busy with stuff)...

But I just double-checked at the store yesterday, and we're gonna go ahead and try something for the last Monday in June; June 27th. 6:00 to 9:00 are the available store hours, but I'll probably do some sort of open-entry intro dogfight in the beginning to give latecomers time to show up. Then maybe some slightly more structured scenario for the last hour or two. If anyone wants to do anything specific, I'll take recommendations, but my primary goal for the first couple of meetings is just to get some attendance.

Speaking of which, ColHajj, I REALLY hate how this thread has been shunted to the nether-regions of the site. You have to be a logged-in US Wing member to even see it. Is there an appropriate place to post a game-meeting announcement where an anonymous browser could see it?

I don't believe I have anything going on that evening, so I could probably make it.

Does their new layout include table space? Is that what the staircase in the back of the store leads to?

Have you been there since they moved? Yes, the stairs lead to a small shop's worth of space upstairs. They have about 6 or 8 plastic folding tables taking up the space, but they should also have a couple 4x4 play surface boards that we'll probably break out for the WoW flying.

Yes, I stopped by there with the family briefly on Sunday to check out their new digs. I didn't go upstairs, but I assumed, since they went up from the back of the store, that they led to some table space. It is only accessible from the game store, or can you get to that area from the upper level of the mall too?

I'm not sure, but it looks like they leave the mall gate closed, so their demo games don't wander off. I assume if they had a spare employee up there they'd open it for large events, but it's generally better for sales if their patrons walk through the store anyway.

I'll see what I can do. It's been too long since I've played, so I'm definitely in the mood for a game.

I'm going to try and be there. With my paltry two planes. (I can only fly one at a time, right?)

Speaking of planes, should I bring mine, or will they be supplied to us?

So, my first priority is just establishing a group to meet regularly at the store. I really haven't gotten much beyond that.

But the way I usually start game nights at home is that I pull out a card from each of the single-seater maneuver decks, and everybody draws a card to get assigned a plane. Then, starting with the crappiest plane (Eindecker, DH2, or whatever), any player that doesn't like his pull can trade up to an unselected plane, or trade with another player; if the sides are uneven, someone has to switch sides to even out. Then we set up sides and play a straight-up dogfight. If we had odd players, the first player shot down comes back in on the lacking side. Then once we're all refreshed on the game, we leaf through the rulebooks until we find a scenario that fits the number of players we have.

Clearly this doesn't make any attempt to reconcile historical periods, and doesn't worry too much about balance, but it's simple. Also, it's pretty easy for people to drop into a straight-up dog-fight, so I'll probably do something similar from 6-7. There was a request for minis, so I'll probably run the same basic thing, just using only planes that have miniatures. I believe I have at least 2 of every single-seater mini-type, and 1 of all the 2-seaters. So if anyone doesn't feel like bringing their stuff (and probably a couple people won't have any...yet) they can fairly safely leave it at home.

My generally preferred rule set is all optional rules except "pilot wounded" special damage from the miniature set, and "shoot the actual plane" (because it doesn't work if you mix minis and cards). I also tend to skip altitude in the first game if anybody's rusty or new.

Now, that being said, I don't really care to create "my Wings of War night", so if anyone has any better ideas for kicking off the night, preferred rule sets, or a specific scenario they're dying to try, please let me know. We can certainly prepare for something different, just remember (hopefully) we'll have a couple people hear about it through the store as well, so for the first couple meetings at least, we should try to keep it something someone walking in off the street could join in.

If I can make it, maybe I'll bring along a couple of the planes that I've built for which there are no official minis, e.g., the Brisfit.

    Hey,

I just found this thread! I was hoping to set up someting similar at the Game Parlor in Chantilly, VA. Savage is a bit difficult to get to on a Monday evening from VA with all the traffic.

Any VA players interested let me know.

Good luck tonight - hope it's a success!

Sorry to hear that JB, hope you're feeling better, and definitely hope to see you next time.

As for last night, it was not the riotous crowd I was hoping for, but frankly 3 people wasn't much less than I expected for the first run. Brian showed up (he actually does have everything, it's a little bit scary) as did Jim, who apparently heard about the event through jbmacek, and we had a fine time.

First game was just me an Brian, on his rookie flight. I wanted to avoid the interminable 2 plane dogfight, so I took the American Breguet BR.14 B2 on a recon mission against Brian's Dr.1 and Albatros D.Va. I figured that evened us out on guns (and kept the B deck off the table), gave him a maneuverability advantage and total damage advantage, he'd have a pretty good idea where I should be going, and I'd have to make it back off the map to succeed; sounded reasonable to me. I had an easy time of coasting right over the target while Brian acclimated to flying, but he got a good shot off as I was turning for home and put a couple holes in my engine, so I had to limp the whole way. I got fortunate in that we had decided we were going to ignore the explosions this time out, so rather than a fantastical death, I managed to limp off the very corner of the map with 16 damage out of my 17 capacity, and an Albatros practically in my blind spot. I don't remember if the Dr.1 survived or not, but I just squeaked out regardless.

Then Jim showed up, and we put together a quick 2-up dogfight; Jim's SE-5a, and Brian's Camel(?) against my twin Udets (Fokker D.VII & Albatros D.Va). I wantonly abused my telepathic Udet link to fly both planes in formation, first targeting Brian, who was quickly dispatched by an explosion, then turning on Jim, who suffered the same fate, for one of the quickest dogfights I've ever played in.

For the third sortie, we returned to the trusty recon scenario, this time over the Belgian front. Jim took command of an RE-8, and Brian ran escort in Jan Olieslagers's Camel. I ran defense with a pair of Pfalzes, putting them on opposite corners this time to prevent my previous shenanigans. My first pass on the RE-8 got lucky and hit the observer, scrubbing the mission, and putting Jim on the run. But he turned back just short of home to exact some vengeance. After a violent scrum the RE-8 went down, but Olieslagers proved to be a daunting adversary, casually outmaneuvering the lumbering Pfalzes (Jim took over one of them after the demise of his Belgian crew; sadly for him, he picked the one with engine damage). After a few more passes at the Camel, I took stock of my situation, and decided 15 (of 16) damage was about enough. I turned tail for home, counting the thwarted Recon mission and downed plane as a successful outing, while Olieslagers and the crippled Pfalz made one more exchange, downing the D.III, and leaving the Belgian alone in the sky, held aloft by his last point of damage.

It seems a good time was had by all, and we plan to be back. Brian's planning to bring in someone else next time, I've got a friend who was hoping to make it but couldn't, and next month Stuart (the store manager) should not have a project keeping him from joining in, so hopefully between them and those of you on here who couldn't make it, we'll have a bigger group at the next meeting:

    Monday, July 25th

I'll do my best to make it next time. I was planning on bringing the whole family, as I'm sure my wife would have been happy to join in a game too, while my kids played Pokemon or something on the sidelines. During the time you were playing, Son#2 was... well... I'll spare you the gory details. And I wasn't feeling all that well myself. Anyway... sounds like you guys had fun! Cool!

Sorry, I completely forgot about it, and I don't seem to be getting the usual emails telling me this page has been updated. How did it go?

I'm hankering for some more WoW, especially since last weekend I spent time at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in New York. Took lots and lots of pics of cool planes while there, including a couple of my favorite, the SS D.III. Sadly, one of my other favorites, their Sopwith Dolphin, has been taken apart. The fuselage is on display, but it's sans wings.

So, work decided to block "game" sites; thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it...
    hop
Anyway, brief synopsis, as I just lost the longer one I had written:

4 players this time: Brian returned; Phil (?) was lured in by in-store advertising, and we pulled in Charles, who showed up hoping for pickup gaming of another sort, though he took to WoW very well, and will hopefully be back. Stuart found another reason not to play.

We started with back-to-back dogfights. They worked out pretty evenly, as I think everyone got a kill, everyone got shot down, everyone won, and everyone lost.

Then we did the standby recon scenario; I escorted Phil, who efficiently scouted the target, and both Germans fell out of the sky before he had the opportunity to return home.

We wound up the evening with a not-entirely-balanced balloon busting mission. Phil played defense with a Pfalz (I tried to convince him to take something beefier) and a pair of AA, and the rest of us (in a SPAD, a Camel, and a Nieuport) had 12 rounds to destroy the balloon. We had some issues getting a bead on it at first, but it went down under a 6 card volley of combined fire around round 6. Phil then escaped to fly another day. I think if we do that again, we need to scale back to B damage attack planes (no that there's a lot to choose from with the minis).

Next game Monday August 29th! I'm hopeful we can get 5 people and officially start a trend of one more person each month...

Nope! I neither have nor desire a Facebook account. I suppose if someone wants to set one up they could, but I won't see it. I wonder if it's possible to set up anything similar using this site...

As for the subscription thing, I suspect at some point you got a notification and didn't check back into the thread; it's real easy to skip a check and kill your notifications.

Yep, I did see a new notification when you posted, so I must've missed it or forgot. I have been really busy lately, and I wouldn't have been able to make it last Monday because I had tickets to a movie screening.

The air is crisper. August is over. Fall is nearly here. It is time for me to begin gaming.

Monday the 26th? That's doable. I could head down after work, dinner at Rams head, drive back to York PA ~8:30.

    I am now confirmed.
Ross will probably go too. I'm working from home Monday and the two of us will drive down from York PA together. Ross is working on some stuff for Dragon and may be writing but at the moment he is leaning towards going.

If I can remember I'll send out a reminder to the usuals on FB tonight. Remembering is a big if though as work today will be a zoo.
