Thread: Felixstowe Query

    Default Felixstowe Query

Having recently obtained a Shapeways Felixstowe (no idea who the designer is) from a wingman I have sealed it up and undercoated it but before I go further I need to figure out where best to put the peg mounting and how to do it. Is it drill in, stick on, bit of both ?!
Looking in the Showcase it looks like the position might be just before the break in the planing hull, or, just after.
I have bomber pegs a plenty so looking at utilising them, may even go straight to Gimbal ball, just looking for advice from the old hands who have already done one or two?
Suggestions, ideas please, chaps. I thankyou

Hey Dave - For my Decapod Felix, I drilled a hole centered along the hull, where the lower wing crosses over, just a little smaller than the nub part of a bomber peg. This was the center of gravity point. Its along the V-part of the hull so I had to first score a mark there and then use a small manual handdrill bit to start the hole and gradually work up the width of the hole with my electric hand drill. Finally I glued two bomber pegs back-to-back to be able to insert one end into the Felix and the other end into a standard bomber peg. So far this set up works well. A pic of the arrangement follows. Good luck and happy sub-hunting!

I did mine with the larger size of gimbal mounts that Keith used to sell. If you need one of those I can send you one of my few left Dave.

That's very helpful, Craig, and an interesting solution with the pegs. I had been wondering whether to insert a full peg, or chop one down and use the base of the peg as I've done with a couple of scouts I've picked up recently.

That would be great, Rob, if you can spare it.

Decal help for this beastie, please.
Can anyone point me to where I can find a pair of large roundels with white borders suitable for a Felix top plane ?
The biggest I've got are 13.5mm w/o border; 12mm with, but they don't seem near big enough.
Managed to mount a peg, though.

Dave - I used Peddinghaus 1/72 decals: #72 3816 RFC and RAF Sopwith Camel Aces over the Western Front"/ www.Peddinghaus-decals.de 1/72 The big ones are 20mm across. You can see them on my Felix in the Painting sub forum or even better in my Shapeways Seaplanes album.
Good luck and looking forward to seeing yours.

20 mil seems to be the right size if you can spare a pair, Gunners.

Arrived safe and well in spite of Posties best efforts to mash the envelope through the door flap. Many thanks Steve
