Thread: Any AARs featuring the Grumman Avenger

Default Any AARs featuring the Grumman Avenger

I'm currently reading Commando Comics issue 5209 titled American Avenger. The story is about a Grumman TBF/TBM crew. Their missions are mostly ground attack bomb runs. Up to now, I knew the Avenger was a torpedo bomber. A quick online search notes the a/c was also effective in the anti-submarine role.

Given the Avenger's effectiveness as a multi-mission aircraft, surely it has been featured in forum AARs, but I'm not finding any.

Any Grumman Avenger fans amongst the forum members?

There has never been an official mini - there might be 1/144 scale options?

Have a look at the Official Grumman Avenger Painting Thread; anyone who has painted one up might have an AAR showcasing it.

    I never saw a 1/144th option; stickly 1/200 scale for my WW2.
AiM has aa Avenger mini in 1/200:

And I thought I saw some on at least painting threads.
    I do have stats

I haven't yet played with the ones I have painted up. I'll have to do something about that!

Minicraf made one in 1/144. I have three of them but I haven't done a scenario with them yet. I prefer the dauntless.

Interesting game. The Devastators and Avengers would have had a better chance of survival had there been a fighter escort to engage the Zero. Interesting AAR all the same.

The Avengers, maybe, Larry, we only lost one Devastator (mine) to flak from the 'guard ships', but all four put their torps home and the other three escaped if I remember correctly. There were F4F's out there amongst the Avengers but it didn't seem to help them much !
Gary (Hu Rhu) provided the scenario and the Avenger & Devastator models for us and ran the game.

You're a bit mixed up there, old chap!

They were all Dauntless dive bombers and Devastator torpedo bombers - there were no Avengers in play.

Tim is correct. No Avengers in play since is was a very early Pacific war scenario.

After a close relook at the photos, those do look like Dauntless, which is a bit confusing as the AAR mentions Avengers repeatedly.

In which battles did Avengers play a role, other than Midway? The story of George H.W. Bush, a young Avenger pilot, could be an interesting basis for a game scenario.

Fine artistic work, Mike. May I suggest a card for the Avenger piloted by Lt. George H.W. Bush of VT-51 flying from the USS San Jacinto?

At least three Avengers names "Barbara," among other planes. Any particular one?

Good question, Mike. I'll try to find out.

All subsequent battles. 3rd Solomons, Santa Cruz, Philippine Sea, Leyte Gulf etc. etc.

Midway was the last hurrah of the Devastator (the six Avengers flying from Midway island during the battle had been actually allocated to USS 'Hornet's air Group, but the two had not yet met up) - they were replaced on all US carriers after Midway, and the type saw no further combat action, all survivors being transferred to training and target towing.
