    Default OTT-EYM - Mission 9 - "Flash Marshalling The Yard" - March 5th 1917

It looked to be a straight forward job, on the face of it. Get over to Cambrai, stonk the railway yards and home for elevenses. Couldn’t be easier could it ? Just watch out for Archibald.
The flight consisted of a pair of Harry Tate’s with a Pup running along as escort should one be needed

    (2Lt Robert (Bobby) Pynne - Sopwith Pup; 2Lt Chris Packett & AM.1 Jack Dawe - RE8; Lt Justin Hale & AM.2 Reg Sole - RE8 Green #14. Came in at 1, 4 & 5 respectively)

Things seemed to go wrong almost from the off, Hale signalled Packett to follow him and led him in a wide sweep attempting to avoid Archibald but he was wide awake and ready for their move; lobbing a round at extreme range toward Packett’s machine. Luckily it over shot and exploded harmlessly above them.

Clocking this, Pynne took his que from the tandems and swerved wide to the left keeping a weather eye all around, aware that Archie would attract the attention of any nearby Hun.

Getting a bit close for comfort, the tandem’s go long so as to cut back on the target. Archibald lets one go at Hale’s machine as he strays into the extreme range of the gunner’s but again their aim is well off.

The RE8’s make their turn but it's clear Hale has been forced wide of the mark by Packett’s proximity. He, on the other hand, seems to be on the money and toggles the first load of bombs. Pynne closes so as to cover their rear

Werner is first with a shot, he’s not sure what happened but one of his Maxim’s jammed solid and it seems he had no effect on the tandem but the stuttering reply from the Vickers of his opponent ripped into his machine, he’ll have to be careful, this pilot means business.

Werner slips into the blind spot of the RE.8 opening a gap for Gossner to fire a damaging burst into the enemy but the response is equally stiff and he feels a jarrring blow to his arm. That’s going to leave a mark and he’ll need to head for the barn.

Gossner hangs onto his trigger and continues to exchange fire with the tandem, taking further damage but causing none obvious, maybe the wound put him off ?
Packett opens up at long range on Busse who has strayed into his arc of fire, further damaging his rudder as Pynne turns to pass on his right.
With his own aircraft in the mix Archie sends his hate toward Hale as he runs in again. He takes a near hit from Archie, seems his aim has improved but no damage caused this time.
(this action caused the error as he should have been setting his drop on this card)

Pynne gets around Packett and pours a burst into Gossner using his sharp eye skill but without the major impact he was hoping for. Dawe does better with his Lewis, setting the Albatros on fire. Gossner keeps the pressure on his trigger sending more rounds into the RE8’s fuselage.
Busse reverses hoping to get on the tail of the Pup but he’s gone. Sideslipping, Packett can’t lift the nose of his machine to get a shot on his foe.
(Hale belatedly sets his drop in the background)

Hales first load impacts the yard area as he decides for one last go round, (if he’d started where he was meant to he could have go two loads away without a go around – c’est le guerre)
As Hale turns right once more, Packett decides to break for home as he’s now defenceless from the rear. Fire consumes something vital on Gossner’s Albatros and it spins away earthward. (That rudder marker should have come off Busse)

Packett was hoping to target the rail gun and looking for pull back on the adjustment but rolled 9 so got nothing, similarly rolled 10 on the second set so they landed as first shown.
Hale must've had his sights knocked skew whiff by Archies near miss as he ran in as he rolled 2 and a 6 for a 6cm deviation to the right ! (I'll pick the X target somewhere near the middle when it comes to it).

Thanks Mike, didn't go to plan for me but great fun trying. I still think I could drop all the bombs before the Hun got anywhere close but the random set up and missing the drop marking messed it up for me.

I flew Pynne, all the rest were AI driven with a bit of directional help to the RE8 to help do the dog leg. I used my charts and usual rules.

Well that didn't quite go according to plan but some bombs dropped on target, a couple of Eagles bagged and only lost one machine so it could be classed as a win, I suppose. Victories to celebrate and the health of a downed crew to cheer on.

Lt Justin Hale receives a second bar to his military Cross for his continued outstanding service to King & country

    On t'other side:

Ltn Franz Werner is awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class for his third victory for the Kaiser (on his third outing too, one to watch methinks).

Reports from the bomb damage assessment are in:
The first strike hit the jackpot, scoring 28 in all. 10 points for the targeted armoured train, destroyed; 5 points for the damaged fuel store, another 5 pts for the damaged train engine alongside, 8 further points for sundry damage to tracks, carriages & buildings in the vicinity.
The second and third strikes were far less successful and came out at +1pt for each, taking into account 1 civvy building destroyed and 4 damaged; so a final total of 30pts.
A partial success according to the BRF.

Germans got 15 pts: 10 for Werner downing a tandem; 5 for the scout FRTB-W by Flak.

Well done, Dave. Not bad results with 2 Huns bagged and what looks like better bombing results than I got. One of the RE8 shot down but that's fair enough and the C&W/E&E rolls went well.

Nice work Dave even if it appears the Bulldogs got some meaty hits on the railyard. C&W rolls were kind so no fatalities or POW.
Will need to see Mike’s scoring assessment now on his return. Nice choice of aircraft for a balanced game.

Yes indeed Squadron Leader. A most entertaininbg outing for our chaps with no fatalities. Good to see another gong awarded to your squadron.

Cheers, chap. It will be a bust if I only demolished housing and knocked off a few civvies. I was hoping to go for the rail gun or the points system but when it came to it I opted to highlight the targets near to the middle of the card, I picked the train behind the rail gun as it looked like a repair vehicle and wanted to slow the repairs of the rail lines. Thinking about it now, it could also be something to do with loading the gun. Only time & Mike will tell !

Nice write up of a very neat little action, apart from the second RE8 having to go round again. Two Huns bagged to one loss makes that a definite win, even if the bombing results are yet to show. Rep inbound.

Well played Dave. I had a little difficulty interpreting your adjusted bombing as I wasn't sure if the whole of the second photo was what you want taken into account. But by the looks of it, I think you'll come out on top with the bombing, particularly around the rail yard and train area - the points for those rails quickly add up, even at one point each. And there are two train 10 pointers (That's a spoiler for those to follow I'm afraid, but what the hell). Quite a few civilian hits, but mostly one pointers and no 10 pointers. Add in the aircraft shot down and you should be a winner, even though, by my calculation you have a shade too many civilian hits. But I'll leave the final tally for you to calculate. Interesting that you chose to approach the target from the east and not the west. Surprised you didn't run into more opposition from the hun, but it did expose the rail yard nicely to the first egg drop. Nice one. Hope you enjoyed it

Thanks Mike, it was a good game but no plan survives first contact with the enemy ! I was hoping to loop left and right then approach from the far side but the random placement of plane screwed up that idea straight off the bat and I was left struggling to roll both up the right hand side and was only able to get the one roughly on target, I wanted the gun and/or the points. Made it a challenge though, rather than a milk run, so all for that !
PS, the 2nd photo has the three (adjusted) bombed areas outlined in red

Nice one Dave, as is becoming usual I'm late to the party and mostly forgotten the scenario, but it was an enjoyable read. . It looks like it might be a more tricky assignment than I originally thought, of course I expect that from the scenario setter.

Your chaps did well, even if the civilians might not agree with my assessment.

I think it could have been much worse for civilians, it appears that Hale's sights being knocked skew whiff by Archibald may have saved a few of them !
