How easy it really was to fly those WWI planes we love so much. If you have a PC or Laptop you can join steam (which is free), then you can download Rise of Flight for nothing and have a go. The program comes with 6 free planes including the Spad XIII and Albatros DVa. I have yet to work my way right through the intro training on the Spad and for me it is NOT easy. To take off could be a challenge and landing assuming you can find the aerodrome you took off from is even harder. Not saying this is useful in our WoG games but it does give you an idea of how hard it really was.

I can get lost just going to a shopping mall - I can't imagine being made to fly my way around the countryside AND return to the same place I left from.

It's a rabbit hole I've yet to go down but if it's free I might give it a run.
The technology was so new and advances so fast and dangerous it still staggers me they even managed to get them to war fighting - if the enemy didn't kill you your plane, or, lack of flying skill could get the job done just as quick. I'd fully expect to join the ranks of those thousands lost in training.

I remember trying it out years ago with a lot of frustration for how difficult it was, I recently downloaded it again thinking a few more years of age would make it easier - still trying to find out as my computer decided to act up shortly after.

There's a few nice examples of that in Derek Robinson's novels - characters that literally last 3 pages

I have often considered getting this but am afraid I will find myself back ina a rabbit hole I finally escaped from 20+ years ago ...
