Thread: Captured Airplanes

  1. #1

    Default Captured Airplanes

How common was it for an intact, captured plane to be...

    1. Flown in combat?
    2. Used to train pilots?
    3. Used for parts?

As far as I can tell, the only pilot known for flying a captured aircraft was Kissenberth. Also, I feel like I've seen far more Allied planes with Crosses than Central Powers with Roundels.

    Hmmm...

There were a few. Kissenberth is an official Ares example.

However, there were planes that ran into mechanical problems that were forced to land, and were captured, which happened more to Entente planes, as they were usually employed more agressively.

Others with more resource material or better libraries will be able to provide specific examples.

    PS: Some Google examples:

Here is a captured SPAD VII. Tested by Putter but no mention of using it in combat.

Ltn Gustav Leffers flew a captured N.16 in combat & may have got a victory with it but was subsequently killed in it on 27th Dec '16 during combat with FE-2b's of No 11 Squadron RFC, the most likely victors being the crew of Capt. John Quested and Lt. H. J. H. D_icksee.. though they themselves were forced down Brit side. Nexus did a N.11 card.

Ltn Rudolf Windisch has SPAD VII cards from Nexus and may well have flown the captured SPAD but it's not clear if he flew it in combat, though I recall a story that he joined a French formation and shot down the tail end Charlie with it but don't recall the source of that tale.

Jasta 18 used a captured DH.4 as a squadron hack, as Tim will attest, obviously not a combat machine but interesting.

Are we certain it was a captured N.16? I've seen a reference to him using a Euler D.I, which was pretty much an N.11.

This image was taken in July 1916 or immediately thereafter with KEK Nord, prior to it becoming Jasta I on 23 August 1916. The Euler's pilot, seen here, Lt Leffers, credited with one 'kill', was to meet his own end near Cherisy on 27 December 1916.

Yes, it was a captured Nieuport 16.

As shown in the photograph, the width and angle of the cowling ring cut-out positively identifies it as such, in addition to contemporary accounts.
Several books have got this wrong - hard to see how!
I laugh in the face of danger - then I hide until it goes away!

On the picture of the captured Nieuport, it is a Nieuport 16.
The Nieuport 16 has a headrest, unlike the Nieuport 11.

Ahh, that really seals the deal...the Euler D.I had no headrest, so it is definitely modeled on the N.11.

Nice workmanship on that captured Nieuport Philippe

I'm guilty of having a few captured jobs in the hangar...
This Nieuport is probably my best known one, it even made it to Origins & back, appearing in a TnT taster game & inspired later German types in that scheme for me.

Leffer's N.11 to match erroneous Nexus card for him - should be a N.16

My source for giving Leffer a Ni.11 is the Windsock article "Under new management" Vol7, No.6 1991. It also inspired Blue Rider in releasing this decal sheet called "Captive Allied Fighters in German Service" and featuring the same four planes:

I did not know that the plane was later identified as a Nieuport 16. Thanks for telling!

Let's not forget KuK pilot F.Welker in his Macchi M.5! (Also an official Ares product!)
