Huzzah 2023 Game 2
The actual submitted game 2 didn’t happen. Saturday morning the convention was full and buzzing but no one was interested in Stop the Train!
So I had an easy morning and time to get in a real lunch before my next game, which is very rare for me at conventions. So a mixed blessing. I got to walk around and see some of the other games being run. A few pics of these are posted HERE in the Huzzah 2023 thread. See post #10.
Game 2 (run) was ‘Against the Flying Circus’
7 pilots hopped into their cockpits and lifted off on their 2pm mission.
A trio of French Nieuport 24s, B firing, were out to down an observation plane. (They have modified I decks to include 90* turns and a wide wide side slip. Quite maneuverable craft!)
Not that easy to down the tandem as a trio of veteran Albatros D.IIIs with acrobatic pilot and daredevil ace skills were there to protect the Rumpler C.IV. The C.IV was slowed down for game balance as its deck is as fast as the N24s and D.IIIs. I gave it the Y deck instead of K Deck it is supposed to have. I wanted it slower than the scouts.
The Rumpler has it’s work cut out for it as it has to fly the length of the board, take it’s photo and back the length of the board. Good luck Hans!
Clouds were present for better of worse. Flying into a cloud gives you protection as you cannot be shot at while your peg is in the cloud. Before moving while in a cloud a d6 is rolled. 1-2 you pivot 45* left, 3-4 all is good, 5-6 you pivot 45* right before moving. Also the first firing phase you exit the cloud you cannot fire but can be fired upon. Clouds have the altitude they occupy marked.
A2 and A4 means all levels of Altitude 2 through 4 are clouds.
Burton moves his Albatros D.III towards the oncoming French. The mission Rumpler can be seen just under Burton’s elbow.
The scouts gather in the gap between the clouds.
One Hun burning, another with guns jammed and a wounded pilot, the first pass goes to the French!
The French head for the Rumpler, leaving the German scouts behind.
The Rumpler observer clears a jam while the French gather off to the right.
I love this game so much I bleed for it. I found out the hard way I had a broken chair. As I moved the chair to stand for a photo op the chair hit me with a B damage card of 1 hit. The hotel manager quickly got me a bandage and some antiseptic. The chair was sent to the brig.
Two of the German scouts looking a little lost with no French or their Rumpler in sight.
The German scouts a little late to the party as the French squeeze the Rumpler to the boards edge.
Somehow the Rumpler evades tha Nieuports. The German scouts slowly get closer to the French.
One Albatros gets into position and disrupts the French trailing the tandem.
The two Nieuports (cards) bumped into each other but both drew 0s for collision damage.
Thomas and John were both trying very hard to get and stay on the Rumpler’s tail. Their next move also resulted in a collision.
This time not so harmless….for John. Boom!
The two remaining Nieuports turn to where they expect the Rumpler to be but it disappears into a cloud buying time for his friendly scouts to get on the French.
After emerging from the cloud with all the scouts out of position, the Rumpler heads for the target.
John in his N24 respawn gets to trade shots with the Rumpler observer.
Once again, the German scouts not in sight of their Rumpler or any French!
John’s latest tangle with the Rumpler does not come off well. Fire!
The Rumpler has the French heading in the wrong direction.
The French regroup and find the Rumpler as it takes its valuable photos.
The Rumpler only has one Nieuport close enough to attack but the French have not given up yet.
Interceptors and escort jockey for position behind the prize.
All at altitude 5, an Albatros does its best to stop an N24 and downs the Frenchman.
The French once again think they have the Rumpler in a squeeze but he disappears into another cloud.
Not sure where the Rumpler will emerge they scatter to cover the most likely exit.
The Rumpler temporarily loses its way but corrects its course and exits facing home.
John, being below the Rumpler does his damnedest to get into any position where he can get in a shot. He gets ahead of the Rumpler planning on a last second reversal bringing him nose to nose with his target.
John’s plan came soooo close to working but the Rumpler escaped bringing its photos back to the waiting HQ staff.
I really didn’t expect the Rumpler to make the round trip, never mind even get to take the photo. Incredible flying by Kevin!
