    Default OTT EYM, Mission 6, 12 Feb 1917, ‘Walfisch Among the Piranhas’ {Stumptonian}

“The tandem took off in the early light for its recon mission deep behind enemy lines. Well behind enemy lines a flight of enemy scouts spotted the tandem and the chase was on!
Luckily, a cloud bank was ahead, not too far away. Safety was in sight. The tandem disappeared into the clouds before the scouts could engage. Knowing the enemy would linger, waiting for their exit, the tandem pilot flew deeper and deeper into the cloud. The conditions in the cloud worsened and became violent. The winds buffeted the plane in many directions, right, left, up and down.
The pilot strained to his limits to keep control, barely. Finally, the pilot decided it was time to exit the cloud for safety’s sake. When exiting the storm cloud there were no familiar landmarks on the ground.
A good thing that the compass was still in good order and a heading for home was set. Little did the pilot and observer know they were about to fly through the enemy’s pilot training area.”

Ltn Justus Raucheisen finally felt he had control of the Roland again, although the engine was definitely struggling.
“Ich habe keine Ahnung, wo wir sind!“ < I have no idea where we are! > he shouted back at Observer Max Jungbauer.

Raucheisen detected movement ahead at their 11:00
As they got closer his heart sank …
    “Englander!” he called to Jungbauer.
Jungbauer struggled to see what Raucheisen had spotted.

“Ah, jetzt sehe ich es. Ein Vickers ...“

    < Ah, I see it now. A Vickers. >

    Tikka tik …

Raucheisen exchanges burst with the DH.2
    “Verdammt!”
    His ‘Spandau’ has jammed.

    Suddenly the Roland lurches violently.
The storm apparently weakened the struts of the Roland and the shots from the Lewis Gun has made things much worse.

[This scenario dictates special rules for the British trainees. 0 and 1 are treated as “0” and any special damage is ignored. Damage at 2 and above is reduced by 1 but Special Damage effects are applied. Booms are at half damage. I noted those with green cubes.]

Not a good start for my Adler ….

    An interesting mission, Peter.
I thought my Adler were done when they drew the Boom on the first turn.
It was a lonnng way to the other end of the table.
The reduced damage rules definitely saved their bacon.

Although my FRTB rolls need some work ....

    All caught up now.

Now to come up with something for Mission 7 ...

Very nicely done, Pete, a tense run for safety with the young bloods snapping at your heels.
Onkel has taken a dim view of the claimed kill, fire damage only takes points and booms into account, so that will remain a probable.

Well, it sounds like you men did well to get back at all with the storms and running into a flying school. Good job they were rookies but they still managed to take some lumps out of your rump on the way, a pity you couldn't manage to get it down in one piece. Never mind, be happy you made it back at all.
No confirmation on your kill - too far back for independent verification but three probable's is nothing to be sniffed at - at least they know you were there.
    Nonetheless:
Ltn Max Jungbauer is awarded Order of Hohenzollern for his continued service and victories for the Kaiser & Fatherland

Pete, Nice work for the Adlers. Those ‘Gitterrumpf’ were no match in the end, but flying at half damage for so long was no fun.

Not sure what the issue is.
RAW "If an airplane draws a fire damage card while it already suffers from fire damage, the player must start again tracking the damage with three counters ..."

That happened twice (never had that before) and then a Boom was pulled.

That was a close one, Pete. Gave the rookies something to think about. By the way, did the Brits have any training schools in France? Hope so otherwise your tandem was way off course and somewhere over England.

Rep will have to wait until I spread some around.

The "fire damage card" drawn while on fire would be for some other reason than fire damage (e.g., if a fire damage card was drawn for a subsequent shot at the flaming plane).

RAW - page 12 (under fire damage): "Only damage points and explosions are taken into account, all other special damages are ignored."

The following paragraph: "If an airplane draws a fire damage card while it already suffers from fire damage, the player must start again tracking the fire damage with three counters..." So that would have to be a fire damage card drawn for some other reason.

I guess I should have had some of my N.11s instead. (Most of which are still in shrink wrap ...)

Okay that clears it up. 'Probable' it is.
I even looked it up as it was happening but misinterpreted it trying to err on the side of caution.

Well, well, Peter. That Roland certainly did fly close to the wind. Half damage at the first encounter, but nothing after that at all. Must have been a nervous run for home for Ltn Justus Raucheisen and Ltn Max Jungbauer. Not seen those DH2's around for some time. Nice to see them back in action, albeit with Rookies. The latter are going to need a whole load more gunnery practice if the survivors of this encounter are to live long after training! Interesting to find a bunch of RFC trainee pilots out in France. Must have been what today we would call "work experience" Didn't end too well for one of them though so I guess he failed his training

Thanks for sharing an entertaining AAR and congrats to the Eagles for what is a good result for them

Well done for getting the Roland home but bad luck on the landing. The wound must have more severe than he thought. Also some bad luck on drawing the boom card early on but at least it was half value.

A bit of a tense mission for your guys, and then to crash on a double 6, that was a bit unkind but at least they survived.
