The British artillery has started shelling German infantry positions in a previously quiet sector. The Luftstreitkrafte is only able to send up a lone Rumpler C.IV in response. The Rumpler has four bomb loads. British troops reported sighting the bomber to the RFC who in turn have sent their only available defender, a Sopwith Pup, to counter the threat.
Special rules:
1. Boom card is half damage rounded down.
2. No altitude rules.
Victory conditions:
German victory if one artillery gun is destroyed and the other is at least partially damaged. A bomb card covering the red dot on the artillery card equals a destroyed gun. A bomb on any part of the artillery card equals a partially damaged gun. Two partial damages on a gun equals a destroyed gun.
British victory if Rumpler is shot down and no guns are destroyed.
Two British artillery pieces on the western edge with a Sopwith Pup flying cover.
The Rumpler arrives from the eastern edge.
As the Pup and Rumpler approach each other the Rumpler suddenly banks right.
Both planes exchange lead but the Pup gets the worst of it with 3 points of damage and catching fire.
The Rumpler heads for the gun to its right leaving the Pup to catch up.
In short order, the Rumpler drops its first bombs on the right-hand gun battery causing half damage.
The Pup catches up with the Rumpler, each missing the other with 0 damage but the Pup’s gun jams, as it battles the flames.
The Rumpler heads for the left-hand gun battery while putting more shots into the Pup.
The Rumpler makes a bombing run on the left battery but overshoots the target. It now has two bomb loads left.
The Rumpler circles around heading back to the partially damaged right-hand battery while dealing more damage to the Pup. Mercifully for the Pup, the Rumpler’s rear gun jams.
The Rumpler makes another bombing run on the right-end battery and scores a direct hit with its third bomb load. It now has one bomb load left to try to hit the other battery.
With the fire out, the Pup closes on the Rumpler which in turn approaches the remaining battery. There is an exchange of lead …..
….. which prove fatal for the Pup.
Unhindered, the Rumpler makes an approach on the remaining battery and drops its last bomb load.
The gun battery suffers a partial hit causing half damage.
With that the Rumpler has totally destroyed one gun battery, seriously damaged the second and shot down the Pup. A decisive victory for the Luftstreitkrafte.
In my haste to put this AAR together, I forgot to identify the pilots. Irish John came over to my Aerodrome and flew his "green" Rumpler C.IV while I was in my Shapeways Pup. I guess in all the panic of putting out the Pup's fire, I was a bit distracted
