HAVOC 2023 game 2, Another Day Over Verdun
With the German ground offensive grinding on the French realized they must do what they can to take out the German’s eyes in the sky. To help relieve the Poliu from the German artillery, downing the observation balloons was the priority of the day.
A good turnout for this battle as 8 pilots suited up and took off to dispute the sky over Verdun.
A lineup of 3 tempting targets for the French! The balloons started at altitude 4 and would begin to be lowered when the first shot was fired at them. So the French has 12 turns to take out the eyes of the German artillery observers. Killing of 2 balloons was needed to claim a victory for the French.
Here come the French! Where are the German defenders?
Not who you’d expect to be on fire. The French pilot was not thrilled with his luck to say the least.
Not to be outdone, another French N11 lights up while the balloon observers look on.
Halberstadt pilot Scott herds the burning Nieuport away from the southern balloon.
The northern balloon anxiously watches the rocket armed N16 fly past, smoking.
The French are not on the lucky end of the stick so far.
Navarre’s (Ben #4) N11 survives his fire. He flies over to Turenne (Bob #6) to tell him how to put his fire out.
Turenne pays no attention and tries to take out his frustration on the center balloon onlhy to jam his gun again. 2 shots, 2 jams. Ouch, we’ve all been there.
Time to move!
A lot of flying but no shooting this turn.
Oh-oh, Navarre is on fire again!
Bob in his respawn N17 heads for the undefended southern balloon. Did he bring extra drums for his Lewis to exchange when he jams?
Lots of buzzing about between the northern and central balloons but no serious damage being done to them….so far.
BOOM! The central balloon blows up!
The remaining balloons are dropping fast. Time is running out for the French to achieve their objective.
Bob, with an unjammed gun, gets in a shot at Scott’s Halb.
Bob gets overly excited, takes a second shot and jams his gun again! At least he had a good result and set the Halberstadt on fire.
The northern balloon is set on fire as it is almost to the ground. Can the French destroy their 2nd gas bag?
Bob, with his jammed gun can do no more damage before the balloon is on the ground.
Jim (N17 #2) is too high and out of range….
The balloon 1s brought down by the German ground crew, the fire is put out and the balloon saved for another day.
To rub in the failure even more, the Germans down a French plane at the end of the battle.
The Germans won the day by saving 2 balloons, but only because the second balloon fire did practically no damage before they brought it down and doused the flickering flame.
