Default WINGS OF GLORY DAY near Paris

Wings of Glory Day - World War I in Epinay-sur-Seine on Saturday March 18, organized by Antsaintex and Monse and attended by Hacik, Spihurry and his son.

    SHOOT THE BALLOON

The first game is an observation mission for a German balloon, protected by a Fokker D.VII and a Fokker E.V (piloted respectively by Antsaintex and Hacik).
An RAF SE.5 and a Sopwith Snipe (Spihurry and his son at the controls) are in charge of neutralizing the balloon and its defense.
    Impartial supervision by Monse.
Three decks of A-Damage cards are used : one for the balloon, one for the German planes, one for the Allied planes.
The balloon starts at altitude 2 and the planes at altitude 3.
The game is played on two game mats.

    1. The SE.5 descends and makes the first long-range shot at the balloon (3 points of damage).

    2. The SE.5 shoots consecutively at the balloon (2 points).
Mutual shooting between the Snipe (2 points) and the Fokker D.VII (5 points + Crew damage).

    3. After a missed shot, the Fokker D.VII (2 points) can consecutively hit the SE.5 (3 points), but it jams and is itself targeted by the Snipe.

    4. The Snipe jams while firing at the balloon (2 points).
The SE.5 performs an Immelman and hits the jammed Fokker D.VII from lower altitude (1 point + Rudder damage).

    5. The Fokker E.V. surprises the Snipe after circling the balloon (2 points + Rudder damage).

    6. The SE.5 jams while touching the balloon (5 points).
The Fokker E.V misses the Snipe (0 points).

    7. Thé Snipe misses the balloon in the previous maneuver.
Immelman of the Fokker E.V and the SE.5 (3 points) which is hit by the German plane.

    8. Consecutive shot of the Fokker E.V on the SE.5 (4 points).

    9. Shots of both Fokker D.VII and E.V on the SE.5 (4 points), which retaliates from the higher altitude on the black and yellow monoplane (2 points).
The Snipe quietly aims at the balloon at short range (2 points).

    10. The Fokker E.V (0 points) escapes the short range shot of the Snipe.

    11. After a missed shot in the previous maneuver, the SE.5 can hit the Fokker E.V. consecutively (3 points + Flame damage).

    12. After the removal of the first Flame counter for the Fokker E.V. (2 points), the Snipe returns to aim at the balloon at long range (1 point).

    13. The Snipe takes a consecutive short-range shot at the balloon (2 points), but the SE.5 misses.

    14. After the SE.5 misses again, the Snipe jams on the balloon (2 points).
Removal of the second Flame counter for the Fokker E.V (1 point).

    15. Elimination of the SE.5 (4 points) by a shot from the Fokker D.VII.
Removal of the third Flame counter for the Fokker E.V (2 points).

    16. Firing of the Snipe from the higher altitude on the balloon (3 points).

    17. The two Fokker have tried to encircle the English fighter which manages to dodge and shoot consecutively at the balloon (5 points), causing its destruction.

Result : the Snipe returns to its camp without being bothered by the Fokkers that are too far away.
English camp : the RAF SE.5 eliminated, the Snipe has suffered 4 points of damage.
German camp : the German balloon eliminated, the Fokker D.VII has suffered 8 points of damage and the Fokker E.V 10 points.

Well done, Simon, was the balloon was downed by the weight of lead within it ?!

A balloon fight is always good for lots of action. Well done

Thrilling AAR, Simon. Goering's all-white D-VII is a favorite of mine.

That game looks like lots of fun. Hopefully Ares will offer balloons again so I can get one.
So how many books are in your personal library?

    Nice report !

Shooting "sausages" (this is how the French called those ballons during WW1 : 'saucisses') seems fun !
It adds diversity to the gameplay.
Make me want to buy a sausage

Did anybody including Ares ever think of scenarios about single-seaters or two-seaters bombing/strafing (moving or immobile) boats, stream trains, vehicles, artillery, tanks... (with possible printed cards) ?

    Here are two personal scenarios.

A D-Day 1944 scenario including landing crafts moving towards the beach (cards moved automatically every turn by their length) :

A moving ground troops scenario, attacked by two-seaters in 1918 (french AAR) :

How about strafing/bombing armored cars or tanks?

Larry & Luc - there are several AARs covering armored trains and attacking boats. I can't get the links right now but check out the June & July 2022 time frame. The titles with Cuckoo in them refer to the Sopwith Cuckoo torpedo planes.

Thanks for the AAR, Simon. It looked to be a good game.
As I read through it, I was surprised at how quiet the Fokker D.VII was?

    Another nice report Simon, thanks.

From memory, in the few games where I've tried to shoot down a Sausage the number of hit cards drawn usually meant it caught fire or exploded before the weight of lead killed it.

Always nice to see a balloon on the table
    Cheers

    Neat little action Simon.
    Thanks for posting this.

    SHOOT THE BOMBER

The second and last game of the day involves a Handley-Page O/400 in charge of bombing two targets and escorted by a Sopwith Camel (led respectively by Monse and Hacik).
Facing them, a Fokker Dr.I, a Pfalz D.IIIa and an Albatros D.Va (Antsaintex, Spihurry and his son at the controls) will try to prevent them from completing their mission.
All planes start at altitude 3.
The game is played on two game mats.

    1. After the first approach maneuvers, the Sopwith Camel tries to fly around the target, the Fokker Dr.I moves away towards the targets, the Pfalz D.IIIa approaches the Handley-Page with its front gunner firing at the Albatros D.Va (3 damage points).

    2. New shot on the Albatros (0 points).
Missed mutual fire exchange between the rear gunner of the bomber and the Pfalz which jams.

    3. Consecutive fire from the bomber's rear gunner at the jammed Pfalz (4 points).
Immelmann of the Albatros that jams while firing at the Handley-Page (2 points) whose riposte misses the German.
The Fokker heads towards the planned trajectory of the bomber.

    4. Missed shot of the front gunner on the Fokker.
The Albatros is in the blind spot of the rear gunner.
Overlap of the bases of the Handley-Page and the Pfalz (with and without a Climb counter).

    5. While it is still quite far from the ground targets but in the axis of one of them, the bomber changes course and its rear gunner aims at the Albatros (2 points + Engine damage), the Pfalz being in the blind spot.
The Camel approaches the central action.

    6. The Camel jams while firing at the Pfalz (2 points), which inflicts 9 points of damage to the bomber while protected by the blind spot.

    7. The jammed Camel cannot take advantage of a potential consecutive shot against the Pfalz, which again aims at the bomber (7 points + damage to the right fender), while remaining in its blind spot.

    8. Third successful shot of the Pfalz on the Handley-Page (5 points).
The Albatros shoots from a higher altitude at the Camel (2 points).

    9. With a new consecutive shot, the Pfalz eliminates the Handley-Page (8 points) which crashes with its bomb load.
If the bomber had maintained its initial heading, it could have attempted to drop its bombs from altitude 3 despite the attacks of the Pfalz.

    10. Alone against the three German fighters, the Camel (0 points) exchanges a shot with the Pfalz (3 points).

    11. The Camel escapes the long-range fire of the Albatros.

    12. Effective short-range fire from the Pfalz against the Camel (3 points + Fire damage + Rudder blocked right).

    13. The Camel deceives its opponent's programming by performing an Overdive which allows it to remove two Flame counters (the removal of the first Flame counter did not cause any damage)

    14. The Camel returns to its camp, escaping from the German chase, master of the terrain.

Result : German victory which eliminated the bomber and preserved its three fighters and two targets.
English camp : the Handley-Page is eliminated, the Camel has suffered 5 points of damage.
German camp : the Fokker Dr.I is intact, the Albatros D.Va has suffered 5 points of damage and the Pfalz D.IIIa 9 points

Anothe very well covered action Simon. The Bomber was doomed once the Huns got into his blind spot, as the trailing Camel was unlucky with nissed shots and jams which could have forced the Pfalz to take avoiding action.
    great game.

Solid German victory. Always enjoyable to see the Handley in action regardless.

Fun AAR with plenty of action. In terms of game play, I am becoming a real fan of the Pfalz D-III which was put to good use here.

During shoot the balloon, if Hacik (Fokker E. V) and I (Fokker D. VII), we had been able to carry out our pincer movement on each side of the balloon, the outcome of this confrontation would have taken a completely different turn.

For shoot the bomber, an error of appreciation on my part (Fokker DR I) of the speed of the Handley from the first phases led me to find myself in front of him and from there, I could not get closer to him and participate in the fight. In the pursuit phase of the Spowith, I was unsettled by its audacity and again was non-existent. My teammates didn't tell me anything but...
    I must pull myself together!
