Thread: Savoia Marchetti S.55 Wings over the Ocean

Default Savoia Marchetti S.55 Wings over the Ocean

While proofreading new Wings of Glory products (the factory is finally working again), I designed a new game: Savoia Marchetti S.55 - Wings over the Atlantic.

You can try the prototype with me at Lucca Collezionando, March 26 10 AM, and at Wings of Prague, April 21st/23rd.
It’s a project by Max Pinucci and Hun in the Sun in collaboration with Aeronautica Militare, on the centennial of the Air Force and on the 90th anniversary of the Decennial Air Cruise from Orbetello to Chicago and New York. Production by Mbvision.

Neither, exactly. Pioneer pilots made solitary cruises to open new routes, in the early part of the 20th Century. Many used seaplanes. In 1919 four Curtiss NC seaplanes tried a squadron crossing from New York to Plymouth, but only one arrived.

Many more did it, or at least tried. Several of them used the Savoia Marchetti S.55, an iconic plane that Miyazaki features in Porco Rosso:

With a S.55 nicknamed "Santa Maria", De Pinedo/Del Prete/Zacchetti went from Italy to Argentina, United States and then back to Italy.

(actually they needed two planes - after a bystander in Arizona threw a cigarette in the water making the "Santa Maria" explode, they had to wait for a "Santa Maria II" to be sent by ship from the Italian factory).

Joao Ribeiro de Barros made also a Genoa - Rio de Janeiro flight in 1926/1927 with a S.55 he bought selling his inheritance.

Italo Balbo thought that the only way to show that these routes were safe and sound for civil traffic was to do mass flights with many planes. In 1930/1931e flew with 12 S.55 (plus two reserves lost along the way) from Tuscany to Rio de Janeiro, selling them in exchange for coffee.

In 1933 he went from Tuscany to the International Fair of Chicago with 24 S.55 (losing the reserve plane in Amsterdam), then back through New York to Rome. Since then, "balbo" has been used in English to indicate a large group of planes.

The latter has been called the Crociera del Decennale because it was in the 10th anniversary of the foundation of Regia Aeronautica (Italian Royal Air Force). This year is the 100th for our Air Force, so the game is becoming part of the celebrations.

In each scenario, a single raid has to be played. Everyone flies it, with the goal to arrive as quickly as possible but losing as few planes as possible. Overall, it is then more a race game I'd say.

Fascinating stuff Andrea, good to know where the "balbo" term came from.
