Default OTT EYM Mission 2 - Hunting and Hunted in the Clouds - 12 January 1917 - by malachi

“The Kaiser is in need of a volunteer.” Obltn Krallen spoke evenly and surveyed the men seated before him. The room grew quiet, and most pilots avoided eye contact with the Jasta leader – no doubt, many were thinking similar thoughts: a single volunteer meant this was obviously not an offensive patrol and going up alone was risky. The empty chair where relative newcomer Ltn Torben Kass usually sat served to emphasize the danger. Shot down just after Christmas, at least there was the recent good news that he had managed to evade capture and was recovering in hospital.

Wilhelm Schnecke found himself standing and responded, “I volunteer, sir.” He immediately had second thoughts.

    “Excellent.” said Krallen. “Come.”

As they walked slowly toward the hangars, Krallen explained that confirmation was required for claims of the flieger abteilung that significant damage had been done the day before to 3 British targets which he pointed out on Schnecke’s map. “Clouds and high winds will make this difficult. Be careful.” Schnecke saluted smartly then proceeded to check on preparations for his trusty Albatros.

Sometime later, as Schnecke battled the winds and struggled to identify landmarks over enemy territory, he spied two approaching planes to his left. The Sopwith Pups piloted by Anthony Asbury and the Aussie ‘Baz” Downton had also seen the interloper and set off in pursuit.

Schnecke sees yet another Pup emerge from behind a cloud to his left. Its pilot, the South African Philip De Roeper turns toward the Albatros. Schnecke is amazed at how tightly the Pup wheels around and feels his machine shudder as bullets tear through it. He remains focused and squeezes the triggers to return fire – nothing.

Thanks, John, this mission was quite a ride! I played it as peg-in-cloud and peg-to-peg for line of sight and determining when to roll a D12 for planes exiting. I rolled to see which “row” (1-3) a cloud would go in after traversing the map. Many close calls but the Daredevil skill turned out to be key, allowing Schnecke to stall again when the cloud was going to move. I don’t think he could have survived trying to circle back to it. Cheers

Looked a little hairy in the beginning when Schnecke was catching lead right and left. An adept pilot using his skills to complete the misson, well done!

Cute little couluds you have there Chris!

Not often you see three enemy aircraft with no damage and yet still manage to pull off a coup.

Well done to Schnecke. His armourer, however, diserves a

Another splendid and tense chase around the mulberry bush, Chris, the hounds were certainly on the scent but just couldn't deliver in the end. Great stuff, well done.

Well done that man, looks like the woodpeckers got to you but you got the job done and made it back in one piece. HQ will be very happy with this days work, that's something to celebrate

Great stuff Chris - I might be a Bulldog supporter but I really was willing that Halberstadt a safe passage home Like the terrain and the risk you took with such small clouds. I also love the use of "discombobulated". Don't recall seeing that one for a very long time

Well done on a lovely Tom and Jerry scenario and victory to the "Jerry" - Congratulations - PS I guess Ltn Wilhelm Schnecke will not be volunteering for any more missions, unless he's tempted in mission 4

You and me both. When he was down to below half damage and getting battered I thought it was all over. Not good flying in the beginning I'm afraid -- I thought I could get past De Roeper and take maybe one hit but the AI really latched on. Now to make a pillow from those clouds for poor Schnecke.

lol, thanks, Mike. "Discombobulated" made me chuckle when writing it up and I recorded that Baz had done a 180 in the cloud -- I wondered if anyone would comment
Schnecke now sits at the back of the room during assembly. He's fine. I hope.

Thanks, all. A fun if harrowing mission. I rolled a D4 for moving the clouds (1-4") and treated them all the same as a group Early on got nothing but 1's, then later most were 3's and 4's which can really mess up a flight plan, or unexpectedly enhance it

That was a good Hitchcock-worthy suspenseful AAR, Chris. Nice table, and, as mentioned above, "cute clouds". I guess you've looked at clouds from both sides now, from up and down, and still some how....it's clouds illusions...

In the end a successful mission and one where all pilots can relax in the mess with a pint.

Maybe you could find some toy Staypuff Marshmallow Men...maybe not as then you'd need some Ghostbusters on the ground to go with them.

    Sounds like a Gaslands scenario.

Schnecke looked as though he was in real trouble early on with 7 points of damage from 2 shots. After that he seemed to use the clouds effectively to keep out of trouble in a deadly game of hide and seek.

I'm pleased he made it home in one piece. Well done.

I was convinced his number was up. Didn't expect the Pup to wheel around on him so quickly. I rolled a D4 and moved all clouds the same and so many scary moments not knowing if the target would uncover, a line of sight would open to an enemy, etc. The early rolls were all 1s, the later ones mostly 3s and 4s. I think I rolled a 2 once
