Default DOGFIGHT SCENARIOS played at the History Games Convention (Great War Museum - Meaux)

A LONELY ROOKIE FIGHTER FACING TWO ENEMY FIGHTERS

During the History Games Convention at the Great War Museum in Meaux, here is a game played between two experienced players, Antsaintex on the Albatros D.Va and Dave (from the club Le Dernier Carré games club) on the Fokker Dr.I, against a beginner discovering the game, Jean-Philippe on the RAF SE.5 (now registered on the WOG Aerodrome under the nickname Bialozhor), under the impartial supervision of Monse.
It will be interesting to see how an inexperienced pilot can deal with two aces looking to build up their record of achievement.
    Altitude Rules.
The game is played on a single playing mat.

    1. The SE.5 avoids a head-on confrontation and shifts to the opposite side of the 90° turns of the Fokker Dr.I.

    2. Unimpressed, the Germans turn around and hit the SE.5.

    3. Mutual fire between the Fokker Dr.I (1 point of damage) and the SE.5 which is on fire (3 points).

    4. Return of the Albatros D.Va which inflicts an engine damage to the SE.5 (3 points), while the English misses its shot.

    5. The Fokker Dr.I takes advantage of the obligation to make a stall per turn of the SE.5 (1 point) to aim at it at long range.

    6. Consecutive shot of the Fokker Dr.I on the SE.5 (1+1 points) which tried a slide to move away from its adversary without success.

    7. Another consecutive shot but without consequence, as the SE.5 runs along the edge of the playing area.

    8. The SE.5 turns around and aims at the triplane Fokker (4 points) affected by a Smoke damage.

    9. Removal of the third and last Flame counter that did not cause any damage.
The Albatros that covered the center of the playing area cannot target the British plane.

    10. Penalized by its Engine damage, the SE.5 tries to move away from its opponents.

    11. The Albatros descends to altitude 3 and approaches the SE.5 at altitude 2.

    12. The SE.5 descends to altitude 1.

    13. New descent of the Albatros but the SE.5 remains out of range.

    14. The English plane leaves the play area, but on the German side.
The Germans capture a plane in good condition and its pilot, happy to have escaped a fatal fate.

The cards fell badly for the Englander but how was he allowed to plan a reversal when still on fire, or is that rule not played ?

Tough luck with the cards for the SE5 pilot Bialozhor.

Interesting scenario - two aces against one inexperienced player - reminiscent of Bloody April perhaps, although much later. Well done the inexperienced player for getting off the mat in one piece.

    Thanks for sharing, Simon

On this game, we authorized exceptionally the planning of the Split-S while on fire, but not the Immelman.

But the follow-up Straight after the Immelmann can't be planned, because the SE5a is still on fire?

The stall & Immelmann card itself are not illegal but the straight is, as Tim points out. That's another A damage at least or instant destruction, if you play that rule.

With the Acrobatic Ace Skill, a Split-S is possible, as the straight can be substituted for another, non-straight, maneuver.

If the SE5a had drawn better/fairer cards it could have been a different outcome... But that is always the way! I don't have an N deck but I have certainly found engine damage to be very frustrating with the Q deck - it really makes it hard to use the tight turns...

It is the reason why we authorized exceptionally the Split-S while on fire during this game involving a rookie playing its first WOG game, moreover with altitude rules.
Just a personal and local rule adjustment.
Anyway, we considered the straight following the return card in the Split-S sequence as a kind of a Descent, like in the Overdive sequence which is authorized even on fire.

What a tough assignment for a new player - taking on two experienced pilots! "Well done", is all I can say, no matter what the outcome was.

A LONELY ROOKIE TWO-SEATER PILOT FACING TWO ENEMY FIGHTERS

During the History Game Day at the Museum of the Great War in Meaux, a second game was played between two experienced players from Le Cirque Volant, Antsaintex on RAF SE.5 and Pomme de Pin on SPAD XIII, against a beginner discovering the game, Alexandre on a two-seater Rumpler C.IV, under the impartial supervision of Monse.

The two-seater must take a picture of a target on the opposite side of the mat and return to his camp.
Will the novice player complete his mission against two experienced aces ?

Each side uses a different deck of Damage A cards.
    Altitude rules.
The game is played on a single playing mat.

    1. First exchange of short-range frontal fire between the Spad (4 points of damage) and the Rumpler (6 points).

    2. Mutual fire between the SE.5 (2 points) and the Rumpler (2 points) which takes fire and jams its two machine guns while also aiming at the Spad (0 points).

    3. The Spad moves away because of an Immelman.
Remove a Flame counter (0 point) for the Rumpler which descends and escapes the SE.5.

    4. Removal of a second Flame counter (0 point) for the Rumpler, out of range of the SE.5, due to the difference of one altitude level.

    5. Stall of the Rumpler which takes the picture.
No shot because of the overlapping bases.

    6. Removal of the third Flame counter (3 points).
Mutual fire between the Rumpler's rear gunner (3 points + Engine damage) and the Spad (1 point + Rudder damage) which jams.

    7. Missed shot by the gunner of the two-seater on the jammed Spad.

    8. Successful shot by the gunner of the two-seater on the Spad (2 points).
The SE.5 moves away from the fight.

    9. Careless descent of the Spad (0 point) in front of the Rumpler, which misses its shot and jams.

    10. A few maneuvers later, the two German crew members miss their respective targets and the Spad eliminates the two-seater (2 points).

Result: 2 points of damage for the SE.5, 7 points for the Spad which received several missed shots.
The Rumpler almost succeeded in its mission, having reached its camp, but the penalty of the fire was fatal.

Gun jams definitely did not help the green pilot in the Rumpler but he did well against experienced players.

Great to run a game at a World War 1 museum!

I think you are cruel though, again you have a rookie up against two veterans!

Default A MIXED GIRLS AND BOYS DOGFIGHT

During the History Game Day at the Great War Museum in Meaux, the third and last Wings of Glory game in the form of a classic dogfight pitted two mixed girl/boy teams, Raphaëlle on the Sopwith Camel and Edgar on the RAF SE.5 against Angeline on the Albatros D.Va and Maxime on the Fokker DR.I (the only beginner discovering the game), under the impartial supervision of Antsaintex and Monse.
Each side uses a different deck of A-Damage cards.
    Altitude rules.
The game is played on a single playing mat.

    1. First exchange of long-range frontal fire between the RAF SE.5 (5 points of damage + crew damage) and the Fokker Dr.I (0 points).

    2. The Albatros misses the Camel (0 point) which shoots at the Fokker (4 points + Smoke damage), which overlaps the SE.5.

    3. At a different altitude, the Camel (5 points) is hit by the Albatros (1 point), itself targeted by the SE.5.

    4. The Camel misses twice on the Albatros which is hit on the third attempt (2 points + Flame damage).

    5. Removal of a Flame counter (4 points) for the Albatros, which misses its shot on the Camel (0 points).

    6. The Fokker jams while shooting at the Se.5 (2 points)

    7. Removal of the second Flame counter for the Albatros (1 point).

    8. Mutual fire between the Albatross (3 points) and the SE.5 (3 points) which both jam.

    9. Removal of the third Flame piece and elimination of the Albatros (5 points).

    10. Mutual fire between the Fokker (2 points) and the Camel (2 points + Rudder damage + jamming).

    11. The Camel (0 point) escapes the shot of the Fokker (2 points + Rudder damage), hits by the SE.5.

    12. The SE.5 fires at short range at the Fokker (3 points + two Rudder damages).

    13. The Fokker escapes three successive shots, ones from the SE.5 at short range and then twice from the Camel at long range.

    14. A few maneuvers later, the Camel is eliminated by an exit from the game area.
The last mutual shot between the SE.5 (0 point) and the Fokker (1 point) is fatal for the German triplane.

Result : The SE.5 is the only aircraft left in the game with 10 points of damage.

Interesting games Simon, in the first one the inexperienced pilot seemed to succumb to bad card draws but was hit twice as often as he hit back. Flying against 2 planes that's probably expected.
In the second game the Rumpler did a great job even though he lost, again the cards seemed to be against him.
Interesting idea pitting 1 inexperienced player against 2 experienced ones, thanks for posting them.
