The Comox Air Force Museum is attempting to finance a display shelter for a de Havilland Vampire Mk III. This aircraft type was was the first operational jet in the Canadian Air Force, with our specific airframe, 17031, declared the Wolrd's Oldest Flying Jet in 1991. It flew to 19 Wing Comox in 2000, and has been in operational hangars on the base since, but not available for public viewing.
Our museum does not have a hangar in which to protect planes from the very damp climate. The Vampire's forward fuselage was built of wood and fabric to reduce weight and improve performance. It would not survive without a climate-controlled structure, and a hangar for all our planes is not financially feasible.
