Thread: Preserving History - the World's Oldest Jet (?)

Default Preserving History - the World's Oldest Jet (?)

The Comox Air Force Museum is attempting to finance a display shelter for a de Havilland Vampire Mk III. This aircraft type was was the first operational jet in the Canadian Air Force, with our specific airframe, 17031, declared the Wolrd's Oldest Flying Jet in 1991. It flew to 19 Wing Comox in 2000, and has been in operational hangars on the base since, but not available for public viewing.

Our museum does not have a hangar in which to protect planes from the very damp climate. The Vampire's forward fuselage was built of wood and fabric to reduce weight and improve performance. It would not survive without a climate-controlled structure, and a hangar for all our planes is not financially feasible. If anyone is interested in the project, more info can be found at the link below:

This project will be difficult for a small museum in a small community. Any ideas on fundraising?

Start with GoFundMe. B-29 Doc's hangar was funded by Kickstarter, so that might be an option but KS is "all or nothing" while GFM can be more open-ended and give you partial funding if not enough is raised for full goal.

More things are going on, moving this project forward.

The concept is a roof, and glass walls very close-in to the Vampire. In the roof sturcture will be heat/humidity machinery to keep the plane preserved. The 3D AutoCad drawing program provided us this image:

We might get this built for the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force, which is next year on 1 April 2024.
