    Part One

Obltn Tilkowski had called the men together for a special briefing. “After the pilot reports from the last mission, Kogenluft has grounded all of the new D.III’s for inspection and upgrade fitting. Until this has been completed we will need to use the older machines we have for patrols. This means in our case, using the Halberstadt D.III ‘s we have been using for training purposes until further notice.” There was an audible groan in the audience as this was taken in and Schulz commented under his breath to Schnellinger “It also means losing all the advantage of the twin guns we have been having!”. Tilkowski continued, “the Kaiser has announced the resumption of U-boat attacks on shipping as a means to end the war quickly. Now we all know that aircraft is the solution to that, but we have been tasked with defensive patrols of the coastal ports where we have our submarine pens as we are expecting an attack following this declaration. As such, Grabowski, Schulz and Schnellinger will patrol the Zeebrugge area using the Nieuwmunster airfield, keeping an eye out for enemy activity.”

Meanwhile at British HQ just over the lines in France, the Bulldogs were being given their orders. Henry Foot and Ernest Gammon were to fly the Short bomber to Zeebrugge, however due to High level Archie activity in the Bruges/Zeebrugge area, they were to take a southerly route past Bruges then turn North to the Zeebrugge target pens in the harbour.
Escorts would be provided by two Sopwith Pups(John Ansell and Horace Elliott). In addition, a Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter piloted by newcomer Gerald Smuts, would accompany them to the area for a spy extraction for the Belgian network (La Dame Blanche) that had been compromised.

On the allotted day, the Eagles begin their patrol in line, flying the coastline

A long game (17 turns) but enjoyable flying different planes, unfortunately the Eagles seemed to dearly miss their advantage of twin guns in the Albatros D.III’s, hoping the problem can be sorted quickly!!

Every time you mentioned Frau Blucher I heard the whinnying - great to see the horses in the credits.

Well played, Baz, but this scenario is certainly looking like a tough one for our Adler ...

    REP on the way.
Now off to read Mike's account, hoping the Bulldogs aren't going to be 3 for 3 ..

A tough fight for your Adlers, Baz. I'd blame the scenario writer, if I were you....oh, wait! Never mind.

At least none of your crew were KIA. Rep will need to wait a bit.

Baz, that was a great outing. I was glued to it from start to finish ("Whinnying from stage left) - Quite Frankly, she's a pretty awesome (or should that be 'orsome) lady is Frau Blucher (More frantic whinneying stage left).
I guess you guys really are missing your twin mg's but looking on the bright side, nobody died. Don't fret either, you'll get those DIIIs back again soon enough.

Really like that Short bomber. Is it a Shapeways model? Anyway, well played - REP inbound and thanks for the entertainment

    Epic Baz.

Well done those men and woman.

Hum Frau Blucher and the horses went right over my head so I'll need to google them.
Not a happy day for your lads but at least no one died and Frau Blucher really showed true grit, maybe you should ask to have her transfered to your Bulldogs permanently

Why did the Short pilot dive down from his unassailable level 6 to level 4, only to get shot up by your chaps, I couldn't quite understand it, I'm assuming some reason other than a death wish!

    Hi John

Thanks for the comments. Frau Blucher and the horses as Pete says above was a reference from “Young Frankenstein”, an early film by Mel Brooks I think.

As for the Short, it had 21 points of damage and a pilot with a Lucky Pilot skill, so there was nothing to lose by getting into the mix a bit. It only has a rear gun so would need to be chased to be effective. I did think it would need to cover the Strutter but the Halberstadt could not catch it anyway. Earlier I had made the decision that the Eagles would take out the escorts and chase the Strutter as it was easier to dive than climb, taking at least 7 phases (3 turns) to get to Altitude 6 where the bomber was at and only 4 phases to get to Altitude 2

That makes perfect sense - 21pts of damage is pretty impressive, I don't have any early big bombers so used a 2 seater, who got very aggressive after their bombing mission.

Great AAR Baz and a resounding win for Frau Blucher. (I also had to look her up).

Out of curiosity why did you opt for Halberstadts when Albatros D.I amd D.IIs would have been available? Indeed the D.IIs were used alongside the D.IIIs for a few months.

Still a great looking game and a wonderful Short bomber.

Hi Gary, thanks for the comments. Used the Halberstadts as it was one of the last chances to use them and wanted to see what difference the A gun deck actually made. I assumed the Halberstadts were readily available as trainers whereby the D.1’s and D.II’s had been returned to the Armyee park.

Ah Baz, like you my own missions get me more often than not. Tough fight. No beating a dead horse when Frau Blucher (whinneying form the wings) is around. She upheld her reputation and was as tough as nails!

That was great having Frau Blucher make an appearance. The thought didn't cross my mind when wrtiting mine up.

It was just the name came to me as I was writing it up and thought she may fit rather than all the glamour blondes the others seem to have come up with!

Isn't that 'The White Lady"? Either way, it was your title putting the Blond Spy into our airplanes.
