Oberleutnant Karl Krallen hunkered low in the cockpit of his Albatros D.III to shield himself from the icy wind. Moments earlier, Ltn Lucas Martin Bluhm had signaled his return to the warmth of their aerodrome due to engine problems. Krallen had briefly considered joining him but the mission was to hinder any enemy photo-equipped tandems and his presence in the area may accomplish that, so on he flew into the biting wind. The typically alert Jasta leader’s concentration had briefly lapsed and it nearly cost him. A bit too late, he spied a plane behind and giving chase. Despite the freezing air, Krallen’s blood ran even colder as he recognized the Nieuport 23 of the Belgian Lieutenant Andre de Meulemeester who had been making a name for himself in this sector.

A fun fight and I enjoyed this one, Paul. It was pretty scary going up against all those ace skills but the damage cards were fairly tame for both pilots. I was a bit surprised neither pilot had to use Lucky Pilot (I usually save it for Fire or BOOMS or Wounds).

Had some problems trying to upload images where the site would just freeze, so it took awhile. That's been happening quite a bit lately if doing a longer post, but hopefully it improves.

An interesting back and forth between two evenly matched pilots.

I did expect the proverbial excretion to hit the fan any time, but it was not to be.

Both pilots get home to enjoy their favourite spirits to get some warmth into their blood again.

The mat and backdrop really worked out well for this one, Chris.
    Well done.

Yeah there were a few times when I was posting my AAR where I considered saving my text to a Notepad file and trying again another time. Then it would be okay again for a few minutes (enough to get my hopes up) before freezing again.
I do hope Keith can tune up the old girl soon ...

    A very interesting combat Chris.
I should drop Keith a PM about your problems with loading.

Excellent fight Chris. Really like your models. Is the Albatros one of Daryl's pre painted Shapeways aircraft? I've ordered a bunch myself and am really looking forward to their arrival. Nice mat too. The one with no man's land printed on it is superb. Makes for some lovely photos! Rep inbound

I've had one or two problems uploading to the site too, but I think mine are to do with the way I use my camera. They come out at 700 x 700 pixels mostly or 700 x 670. The latter uploads perfectly but the others come up sideways, no matter what I do to them before cropping. After that they are ok. But its a real slow process going through 50 + pics to do that. The only other problems I have had are when I try to upload pics without reducing the file size. Otherwise its been ok recently. I'll be interested to hear what the problem is.

A fine action, Chris, Like the ace choice - Herr Meulemeester tested your mettle, he really seemed up for a fight !

Well done, Karl, glad you made it back in one piece. You've just re-confirmed that flying alone over the trenches is not recommended !

    Thanks, all!

Onkel, Krallen is happy to be back in the fold. His hands are a bit shaky but he tries not to show it.

Mike, yes the Albatros is the Loeser D.III from Daryl, a high def version before the FCN12 became available. I find the less expensive ones are nearly as good; I may order one just to compare in person. I figured I would go insane trying to paint such stripes so am glad the scheme is available!

de Meulemeester sounds like quite a character: wiki. A natural leader, musician, painter, and interesting story. Especially if you're painting models, I highly recommend the Pieters tome quoted at the beginning of the AAR -- lots of wonderful plane profiles of all types and interesting brief pilot profiles. The majority of the book consists of daily chronology battle reports which can be a bit repetitious by nature but nuggets of inspiration can be found.

Pics: my phone pics are 4624 x 3468, which I download from google photos then batch resize to 20% size, usually 924 x 693. I don't have many issues with sideways pics anymore, but the site will freeze occasionally if uploading pics in a long post. But I don't think it's related to pics as just trying to start a thread was also unresponsive. Just seems that sometimes the site freezes -- hope that info helps.

A dragged out 12 round draw! Well flown by both pilots. Krallen had his hands full and got away pretty lucky with his damage cards. Looking forward to seeing these two meet up again.

*very* lucky on his damage cards
At the end with the string of goose eggs, I redrew once to see what could have been and even the redraws were zeroes.
Sharp Eye is very potent esp combined with Perfect Aim but the Belgian got unlucky not drawing any heavy hitters. Those moments had the most cold sweats!

Glad you found it fun, Chris. I was a good even fight even though the damage cards were tame; they can be that way.

I've also had problems with uploading. I upload the photos to an album, then I don't have to worry about the site freezing - although it stalls a lot these days. So, I will upload 6-10 photos to the album, save and then go back and add more. when posting the AAR I paste in the text from a Word document and then used the manage attachments feature to select the photos I need. Usually, I can easily insert at this stage but now the drop-down list is sometimes blank.

Glad you persisted as the photos were great.

Krallen survived the encounter which is a good result in my book and he gets to fly in a candy striped plane, he's a lucky man.

I like the way you showed the pictures relating to the text as a series, it made following the action nice and easy and combined well with your jolly spiffy mat.

    Cheers

    Thank you, all

de Meulemeester is usually a light-hearted guy, but had some harsh words for his armorer upon return. A couple of those gun jams were annoyingly untimely when he had just obtained great position.

John, I suppose the peppermint stick Alb D.III could be tasty but fortunately I'm not a huge fan of peppermint. It fits the holiday (ours) and post-holiday (theirs) timeline though
