After Action Report: Illinois Squadron
Efforts were made to pinpoint 3 German Artillery Batteries concealed behind their lines. A Balloon was brought up for this task, but failed in the pinpointing. The decision was made to send in 4 British RE.8's to find them, equipped with the new Wireless Radios to relay in Morse Code back to the Australian company of Artillery that was secretly brought in to destroy the German Artillery in loo of a British attack on the line.
The RE.8's were being supported by a squadron of Sopwith Triplanes and a Spad VII, and was set upon by a squadron of Albatros D.Va's escorting a lone Roland CII on a Observation/Bomb run. As both sides mixed it up, losses were received on both sides. The Roland was able to get behind our lines, and strafe some of the trenches, as well as get dangerously close to the Balloon, but was set afire and dealt with.
The RE.8's were able to complete their mission, damaged but sent the radio codes to our artillery which destroyed the German Batteries, setting the stage for future infantry assaults.
Faithfully submitted:
