Our usual gaggle of pilots (myself, Baxter, Windy Jack & Mark) was reduced as Mark was granted sick leave by the MO. It was my turn to plan the evening’s ‘festivities’ and I chose a scenario that I had stumbled across on the forum while searching for something else (the way of the Internet!) titled ‘Stealing Secrets’ posted way back in 2010.
The back story goes like this:
“While undertaking field trials of a new prototype engine, the unsuspecting pilot flew over a battery of camouflaged enemy AA guns. Despite using all of his skill to keep the aeroplane flying, several of the AA rounds found their mark forcing the pilot to try and find a safe area nearby for a controlled crash before making his escape on foot. The race is now on as both sides try to prevent their opponents from getting control of the damaged prototype...”
I slightly modified the rules but you can read the original post here: https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sh...ealing+secrets
The wrecked prototype was represented by a card that I quickly whipped up and a partially modified F-Toys model that I’m in the middle of altering to represent a cropduster for my brother’s N-gauge model railway.
The defending players are flying a Breguet (Grebil & Carron) escorted by a SPAD XIII (Madon) and they are opposed by two Albatros D.Va (Weber & Udet).
The two French aircraft set off to destroy the wreck (or the opposition)
While Weber & Udet begin to set themselves up for a beam attack
The Breguet takes the first shots at the wreck while Madon totally misjudges his run and sails on by
While the Grebil is focused on hosing down the wreck, Udet swoops in and fires at the Breguet
Not to be deterred, Carron gets off a shot at the wreck
But Udet chimes in again
And the dance continues with Udet & Carron exchanging unpleasantries as Madon hammers away at Weber and the two promptly collide.
By now the Breguet is in a spot of bother – trailing smoke and a rear gun jam!
At the same time Weber & Madon continue to chip away at each other
Both French aircraft finally wriggle free from their opponents and get clear shots at the wreck
However, the accumulated damage sees the Breguet fall at the same time as the wreck was finally destroyed – mission accomplished but at a cost!!
We had our usual debrief post game and wondered if we should have had a machine gun by the wreck, on the assumption that the Central Powers had got to the wreck and had set up a machine gun post. We also wondered if different aircraft would have tipped the balance but, as with all air battles, who knows??
