Thread: Immelmann

    Default Immelmann

I’ve read someplace that the Immelmann turn fell somewhat out of favor as a maneuver because it momentarily left the airplane and pilot very vulnerable for a moment at the top of the maneuver. Our group is experimenting with not allowing the Immelmann plane to fire while playing the card. Thoughts pls

The actual Immelmann maneuver I believe involved stalling your plane. When planes got more agile and fast, that made yourself an open target. Some of the later war planes were able to turn around in different manners and not leave themselves open.

There have been a couple of threads here with optional maneuvers.

The WW1 Immelmann is a form of Hammerhead turn - often called a stall turn which is a misnomer as it doesn't actually stall but gets very near it before turning and diving to regain speed.
Obviously moving very slowly at the top of a climb with no momentum, or, energy, can leave you very vulnerable to the enemy, especially once they had learned 'the trick'.

During the move the plane is pointing upwards or downwards, so not allowing the Immelmann plane to fire while playing the Immelmann card (2 & 3 in the diagram) as a house rule is a reasonable concept but you might find it frustrating in use when you miss a shooting opportunity!

As you are considerably slower while in the peak of the maneuver I see where it makes you an easier target but not inhibiting you from shooting.

Would it be better to have being targeted while Immelmanning give the shooter a + bonus or an extra B damage card instead of stopping the Immelmanning plane from firing?
