US Navy Hanriot HD 2, NAS Dunquerque Spring 1918

These are a pair of Reduced Aircraft Factory’s Hanriot HD2 floatplanes done up as members of the US Navy’s contingent stationed at NAS Dunquerque in early 1918. According to Chandelle’s Journal of Aviation History, Volume 2, Number 1, March 1997 article titled ”Foreign Legionnaire: France’s Hanriot HD.1 in Foreign Service, Part 2, the US Navy’s HD2s “in Flanders were painted in light blue-grey”. My version may be a little darker but I went with the Vallejo color of that name.
The one with the red heart on the fuselage appears on several commercial models, including most recently RAF’s pre-painted version. The second one, with a pair of playing cards on the fuselage, is fictional but I saw one of the Italian HD1 planes used the playing card insignia so I copied it as a homage to them. Carl-Brisgamer posted a playing card image in his HD1 Painting Showcase entry for use which worked great once size reduction was completed.

Reduced Aircraft Factory late version models with tails sanded to approximate early version.
Profiles based on Eduard images, Windsock Datafile 92, and online photo.
Decals: roundels from miscmini, others homemade.

Shown with Reduced Aircraft Factory full-color Maitre-pilot Yves Jaques Le Creurer D.30 and Maitre-pilot Eugene Le Guennec D.37.

“Aviation Maritime HD.2s have been portrayed both as silver and beige/light brown. The lack of verifiable surviving fabric makes any conclusion necessarily speculative… The light-colored appearance of postwar US Navy Hanriots stems from the use of the light grey protective finish called Naval Gray.” – windsock datafile 92
Martinet squadron insignia (not a swallow as noted by Eduard): in French, the diminutive form of martinet is also the word for hammer, referring to a type of flail used to mete out punishment.

I found this photo on the Rise of Flight forum. I’m not sure when it was discovered but it’s not in the 2002 windsock 92. I’d wrongly assumed that I needed shapeways HD2s in the late version, but the French ones are the early model with smaller tail and rudder, so I tried to sand them down
The two planes at the far end display no martinet and the furthest would appear to be D.35. The windsock and Seefrosta Aeronaut are helpful in listing pilots that correspond to certain plane numbers. Le Creurer’s D.30 seems to have a light-color center top wing, or that could be a reflection? D.30 was the first but later the individual codes ranged from D20-D39. Is the man walking behind D.30 having a bad day or has his head been edited out?

D.35 – Vallejo mc Pale Grey Blue (also floats/struts)
D.36 – Vallejo mc Dark Sand
Cowling – 50/50 mix secret weapon miniatures Engine Metal and P3 Galvanized Steel
engine and MGs – secret weapon miniatures Dark Iron
tail – Vallejo game color Bloody Red, game effects Rotten White, 50/50 mix of mc Sky Blue and mc Medium Blue
beneath tail and tail struts – Vallejo mc Black
pilots – Vallejo mc Khaki and Saddle Brown
interplane struts – Citadel Mourfang Brown
    prop – Citadel XV-88

The unit together, plane numbers and some pilots known from Seefrosta and Windsock Datafile 92.
The two planes in front are Reduced Aircraft Factory color shapeways models.
It’s uncertain whether French HD-2 colors were gray or CDL so I went with 4 of each.

    Thanks very much, guys.

    Appreciate that, Craig. Some examples:
Finding a similar font for the '2' was a mini-quest.
Although the pilot and D# is known for D.39 it's not certain that it's the one with no martinet in the lineup pic second from the far end, I just went with it.
The "r numbers" are known for 2 planes but I just made fictional ones for the others. I'm not sure any human can read them anyway lol.
