I got to play several scenarios run by Bill Weber at DayCon this past weekend. This one was London Blitz - a Staaken sent to bomb London. The players all flew British fighters sent to intercept.
A historical note: someone ran this same scenario at Origins in 2018. They had some Litko crashed aircraft markers, and they used those to represent British aircraft that got shot down. This led to some unintentional humor, as by the end of the scenario you could trace the movements of the Staaken over the course of the scenario by following the crash markers of all of the British aircraft.
The scenario setup was straightforward - all the fighters facing the Stakken and go full bore ahead.
The first photo is the first turn where we were in range for a shot. I'm in the plane at the bottom. My first shot I miss - and get a gun jam! Not a good time for this (like there ever is), as I'm going straight on the next card.
The Staaken shoots but misses me.
I end up flying past to the rear. For the next three cards I'm plotting an Immelmann to get back in the fight as quickly as possible. What you can't see in this photo is that underneath the Staaken card is a Sopwith Camel card. This will prove to be important...
...because he collides with the Staaken. Each draw a C damage - the Camel draws a 0, while the Staaken draws a Phillip Marritt..er, boom card, for half damage. Then the Camel in the Staaken's 4 o'clock fires - and pulls another boom card. Game over.
This one really took me by surprise. It was pretty much the opposite of the scenario at Origins 2018. In that one, the Staaken knocked down everything that got close to it - this one the whole thing was over in about 15 minutes. We talked about resetting and starting over, but a couple guys had to pack up and head for home, so we set up a scenario similar to this one using a Gotha.
