Default OTT BYM Mission 11 – The Turkey Trot - 19 Dec 1916 by Hu Rhu

Earlier in the day Ob Ltn Stefan Koch had given orders for a reconnaissance and escort mission. Fwbl Gerhard Becker found himself in his Roland C.II, on his way with his observer Ltn Walter Kruger to photograph a section of the Tommy trenches, that the ‘Top Brass’ believed to be an area for the next British push. They were being escorted by Ltn Horst Langer in his new Albatros D.III.

What they didn’t know that their Jasta Fuehrer had his own secret mission. Ob Ltn Koch was feeling a little insecure in command of Jasta Adler, having been wounded twice and shot down once and had not yet had a chance to show his leadership, other than to send other pilots out on missions as he recovered from wounds.

He had just come back from hospital to find that not only had Ltn Dieter Roth done a wonderful job of commanding in his absence but had also reached ace, whilst Koch and no kills. He felt he had to do something to re-assert his position of authority.

He had noticed that the commissariat had failed to provide a Turkey for the traditional Christmas dinner. None were now available and it was getting close to Christmas. He remembered an earlier patrol report of a crew which had escaped across No Man’s Land, that just over the lines was a large turkey farm with plenty of birds only a week ago. He decided that he would rectify the shortfall himself and at the same time earn back some admiration from his pilots.

So, he found himself in the strange position of sitting on top of a large turkey and heading back over the lines being pursued by a SPAD VII being flown by Lt Basil Blenkinson, who understandably was ‘slightly miffed’ that a Hun pilot had the temerity to steal the turkey destined for the Bulldogs Mess dinner.

To add to Koch’s woes another pair of SPADs appeared from the South. These were flown by 2lt Robert Davies (Grey SPAD) and 2Lt James Welsh (Green SPAD) and although they hadn’t yet spotted Koch, they had seen Becker on his photo mission and were heading Northeast to intercept him.

Koch is happy that his plan is working although slightly worried about the faster SPAD on his tail. Suddenly, the turkey, who was stunned until now, woke up and started struggling violently. Koch who was sitting on it and hadn’t been able to do up his seat belt, was almost heaved out of the cockpit and stalls the plane. Meanwhile the SPAD closes almost within range.

Another lurch sends the Albatros sharply to the right . Blenkinson, who can’t quite believe what he is seeing, thinks ‘The bloody Hun’s got St Vitus’s Dance’, before taking a shot.

Meanwhile Becker is calmly heading along the line of trenches and Kruger takes the second photo. Langer manoeuvres to intercept the oncoming SPADs, who seem to veer off line.

Blenkinson, anticipating another wild swing, was disappointed as his speed carried him temporarily out of arc. Koch takes a moment to stun the turkey by hitting it over the head with his pistol. With the turkey temporarily quiet, Koch regains control of the Albatros.

Having completed his first run, Becker begins the turn to put him in position for his second (and hopefully his last) run, whilst Davies and Welsh swing back round, the speed of the SPAD now their undoing. Langer meanwhile in the D.III struggles to keep up.

At this stage, Koch thinks he has the situation under control but all that changes in a flash. The turkey again springs into life and with another lurch the Albatros flies directly into the path of Blenkinson, who fires at close range, damaging the German’s engine.

Both Davies and Welsh having completed their turns now line up on the Roland . Becker and Davies exchange shots at close range, with the Roland receiving minor damage but Becker’s shots rip into the SPAD, which explodes and falls into No Man’s Land. Kill to Becker.

    Victory Points:

    Adlers:
Bringing home the Turkey = 20 Pts
    Photographing all 6 trenches = 15 points
Shooting down enemy scouts = 10 pts
    Total 55 pts

    Bulldogs:
Enemy plane FRTB = 2 Points

    Clear Adler Victory

Caveat to the story - As you will see in the AAR there were a number of times that cards dealt to pilots, had a material effect on the game. Those in my own Wings Group know, that where two cards are available to be drawn, I always choose to draw the second card and have applied that same method to all my Adler pilots in the OTT games.

Wow, that was a close run thing. Becker managed to get home with just a single point of damage remaining and both himself and his observer wounded.

    Well done, Gary.

You wiped the floor with them and brought back a turkey to boot!
I hope I can do as wall when I (hopefully) play mine this week.

Unable to send REP - hope to unjam and come back after I have dished out some more to others.

P.S. Looks like you had similar photo problems as I had with my last one. The words are out of sync on some of your Tally pics.

Hi Gary, a busy game and a nice touch on the story to make Koch better liked. It was dangerous for sure and I am sure I would have liked to hear his story in the mess how he Claimed to have a done an Immelmann with no seat belt and a semi-conscious bird between his legs!! Would have been most entertaining and earned pilot respect straight away. Langer didn’t get involved and could so easily have helped out, but the cards were against him.
Again, the Roland and Albatros get the better of the fast SPADs. I am sure the tables will soon be turned for both me and you and we will have trouble.

I quite forgot that he wouldn't have been able to do an Immelman (actually it was a split S but I mis-wrote it) without a seat belt. Something to do with centripetal force or other such nonsense. But it would have been a good tale.

During the game I played Koch with three randomly drawn card, inserting a stall if one was not already included. Each turn I allowed him an opportunity to stun the bird (requiring a 6 on a D6) he managed it twice, once just before he tried to Split-S (he was running out of table room). However during that turn I also threw a dice to see if the turkey recovered and would upset the Split-S and thus damage the aircraft due to an illegal move but for once the turkey remained stunned.

I also played the tailing rule and allowed Blenkinson to alter his cards to match the wild exertions of the Albatros if he was able to. At one point however the cards selected for Koch were so random that he couldn't stay with him and as you know it takes a long time for a SPAD to turn and thus he missed his chance to catch Koch before he escaped.

I have no doubt that the SPADs will get their revenge but perhaps they need a little help in card selection to overcome their lack of manoeuvrability? I'm sure if a human was flying one of them rather than all AI they would make a better fist of it.

That was a very bold move for Koch to fetch the Turkey dinner himself, especially being chased by a faster plane. I'm glad it paid off for him.

A most entertaining story with two stars, the turkey and Becker. Stunning the turkey was a clever addition to the game but maybe using tailing gave Blenkinson too much of an advantage, which of course he didn't capitalise on. In my trial game it was the wild gyrations of the turkey plane that saved it, the AI had lots of trouble predicting where it was going.

Beckers story was one of bravery and determination, aided by Krugers calmness and dedication to the main job of taking photographs. Really pleased they made it home even if not in one piece. I'm sure there will be medals in the post when Oncle reads this.

I expect my Rep gun is still jammed but I'll circle around, this story deserves it.
    Cheers.

Nicely done Gary, thought the Immel was dubious as Koch not strapped in according to the scenario note 4 but otherwise a splendid outing and much fun to read.
As the only one here that'll know, I can attest you take the second card drawn at all events we play together !

    Onkel says:

Splendid effort men, Higher command will be very pleased with the photographs obtained, it was costly but the lads will recover from their injuries and their victories will cheer them up.
Koch's provided Christmas dinner for us; we better take some to him in the infirmary as his plane stalled on approach and piled at the threshold of the runway. At least he managed to keep hold of the beggar and prevented it getting away from him. Prosit !

Fwbl Becker is awarded his pilots badge for his first victory
Ltn Walter Kruger is awarded his observers badge for his first victory and photography efforts on this mission

Ltn Dieter Roth will take temporary command again while Koch recovers

Dave, thanks for reminding me about Koch's engine damage. Did you do the C&W rolls on my behalf?

That gives Blenkinson a probable (Koch) which I have amended on the tally above and would be grateful if you could also alter the Squadron spreadsheet.

Onkel always rolls if you miss it, Gary, I was horrified when the double 5 came up but the C/W roll was kind with a 1 so not too bad a result in the end.
I have sorted Blenkinson's roster entry - I knew there was something else I had to do but was juggling a few things and overlooked it.
