Default Gritty Goblin Games Wings of Wa/Glory, 7 July 2022

AAR #1 We only had three players for our balloon scenarios so we played two on offense and one on defense, although defense was supported with two ground B-firing machine guns. Craig flew an Albatros D.II on defense while Todd had a Belgian Hanriot HD.1 and I had a SPAD VII. The balloon was on the center line of two Ares mats while the Belgians started in one corner.

Todd shoots up one of the machine gun lorries, while I fired at the balloon. Todd asked why I didn't fire at the trucks and I said, "We have to inflict 28 points on damage on the balloon in 12 turns."

Todd has destroyed one of the machine gun lorries, while the balloon has zero damage from me and my guns are jammed.

Todd attacks the balloon, while the second truck fires on him. My very "nimble" SPAD VII is trying to get back at the balloon. Meanwhile Craig is closing in from the other side.

The balloon has suffered a very fatal "BOOM."

However Todd was within a 1/2 ruler length of the exploding balloon. The "C" damage card was a second engine damage card which was enough to bring him down.

Craig has suffered quite a bit of damage from the exploding balloon, but the Belgians got the balloon and won the scenario.

A very incisive attack on the Drachen Robert.
I like the simple scenario too. Just the thing to while away the odd half hour or so.

They are both by Red Eagle Miniatures.

Nice! I like the Red Eagle machine gun trucks. Nice touch! Looks like a nice game!

AAR #2 After much difficulty uploading photos, I can finally post the second balloon attack of the evening. This game was a lot longer than the 1/2 hour first game. Todd played defense, this time, while Craig had the Spad VII and I moved to the Hanriot HD.1 Again, we started in the corner. Here Craig is shooting up the Albatros D.II while that aircraft is attacking my Hanriot.

The balloon is just out of my range so I shot at the AA machine-gun lorry instead. The Albatros has switched to the Spad.

And the lorry explodes. One less BOOM card for the balloon.

I am overlapping the balloon so I cannot attack, but Craig sets it ablaze. Meanwhile the second lorry opens fire on my Hanriot.

I fly past the balloon (rudder damage so I might as well go straight) with Todd on my tail.

Craig inflicts damage on the second lorry while I fly past the balloon again. Meanwhile Todd is trying to deal with his burning Albatros.

I didn't get the photo, but Todd's Albatros is out of the action. Damage on the balloon is climbing, but very slowly. I said that the observer is wounded and Craig said, "The observer parachuted a long time ago."

After a few more passes, the ballon was set on fire a second time and it finally got a BOOM to finish it off

I had rudder damage on two occasions which limited my attacks on the balloon.

Craig did not draw much damage, but notice the four gun jam cards. Todd complained about the number of missed opportunities to shoot us up, some at +1. The Germans had very bad ammunition during this game.

    Grand couple of games, there!

    REP!

    Point of order, though....

And the lorry explodes. One less BOOM card for the balloon.
Not so - when any card-accumulating element is destroyed, it's damage cards are immediately shuffled back into the damage decks, so can be drawn anew.

Nicely done Robert & Craig, Tim's point of order is the way to go, keeps the Boom threat ever present.

    Another well described action Robert.
We have a little card on a stand with a parachutist on it to play when the observer jumps. This saves any arguments about if he is safe or not. Also helps if the Balloon is artillery spotting in the scenario because this is obviously as good as shooting down the Blimp, at least for that period of time that it takes to winch in to re install the observer and winch back up again.

Nice little AAR - I like the machine gun lorries and also the suggestion of a marker for a parachuting observer!

It's amazing how many ideas you harvest when reading other player's AARs!

Glad you like my little creation, chaps!

    The parachute canopy is.........

    ...........wait for it.............

    a "Parachute Canopy" by 'Shapeways'

This one is 1/144 scale (the same as the WGF planes!): they also do a 1/200 scale Canopy, to match the WGS aircraft.

The photo above shows my "Bruno Stachel" Pfalz D.III to demonstrate 1/144 scale, alongside a 1/144 'Reviresco' seated pilot, a sprue of 'Peter Pig' 1/144 aircrew, and a row of five of the Chinese-manufacturered "workmen" I bought on ebay for less than £5 for the whole bag, with free shipping!

There are multiple poses, three of which are suitable for parachutists hanging from drag lines.

On the right of frame are two 'Shapeways'1/144 canopies, and one 1/200, shown for size comparison.

To make a parachutist, I simply assembled a 'Litko' flying stand, glued the Canopy to the top of the pole (offset to one side) and glued the painted figure to the clear pole, on the same facing as the canopy overhang.
