    Default OTT BYM Mission 10 – Good People! Don’t Shoot! 12 Dec 1916 {Stumptonian}

    Prelude

The Bulldogs have been tasked with escorting a lone Sopwith 1-1/2 Strutter on a coastal bombing run.

Prior to meeting up with the Strutter there was very nearly an ‘own goal’ moment as a Sopwith Pup thought he had caught the Germans and dived into an attack.
Luckily his gun jammed after imposing only minor damage to one of the SPAD S.VII escorts.

    “Crikey!”
shouted Aussie 2Lt ‘Baz’ Hill, waving his fist at the over-excited Pup pilot.
There may have been some adjectives involved.
The Bulldogs were unable to make out any squadron markings on the now scarpering Pup and continued toward their target.

Hill’s wingman in a second SPAD S.VII is Scottish F/Sgt. Alex David

The Strutter is flown by Lt Douglas Winterbottom with Observer/Bombardier AM3 Frank Wilkinson
The coast is coming into view and Winterbottom scans the horizon for a suitable target.

Not yet in the Englanders’ view is a flight of Jasta 24 ‘Adler’ who are serving a rotation defending the coastal area.

Leading the Adler is Ltn Günther Giesebrecht in one of the new Albatros D.III
On his right is his usual wingman, Ltn Till Hübner in his usual Albatros D.II.
Trailing them is Ltn Felix Eisenhardt in another D.II
He is feeling just a little ‘rostig’ (rusty) having spent the last 6 weeks recovering from injuries suffered on his last mission back in October.

I bet Frank Wilkinson regretted being selected for that trip ! What a loss - the last Bulldog gunner with gongs and victories goes west.
Great action and Hübner finally gets his much sought victories to end his drought

    Onkel says:

Well you couldn't save the ship but you made the enemy pay for their temerity by clawing them from the sky. Much to celebrate in the Mess
Ltn Till Hübner is awarded Royal House Order of Hohenzollern for his fifteenth & sixteenth victories for the Kaiser un the Fatherland

    On t'other side:
AM1 Patrick McNeaney joins the Bulldogs to partner Winterbottom in the tandems, Billy Holder is due back soon and will take Wilkinson's seat.

Thanks, Dave. I noticed that when I was moving Wilkinson to the 'fallen airmen' section at the bottom of my Excel sheet.
AM1 Patrick Francis went down just two missions back - both had 2 kills.

Wilkinson KIA and Winterbottom out for 6, yet David, with two wounds is right as rain.

I'm not sure I have ever rolled double sixes on a C&W roll before!

Goes like that sometimes, he's one lucky git !
Scanning through the roster again I see that AM3 Billy Holder is due his Military Medal and a Croix de Guerre from our gallant allies for his service to King and Country so far. Overlooked when he was wounded I expect.
AM1 Patrick McNeaney who arrived this week has also been found to be a Bullet Checker... he'll have to team with Shepherd if needed before Holder, or, Winterbottom get back.

I bet it felt good for Hübner to finally get that elusive 15th and triple ace kill. It seems he's been to the altar so many times only to be jilted by Lady Luck.

Well done game, Pete. I expect that Hübner's purse is going to feel a lot lighter after he gets his next mess bill but I' sure he'll feel it's money well spent.

Great descriptive story and photos. Great win for the Adler, unfortunate loss of the ship. Huber as a triple ace looks unstoppable.

Nice one Pete, bad luck for Wilkinson but 2 great victories for Till Hübner, he's been waiting a while to get to the status of Triple Ace and with the lucky pilot skill he should be unstoppable in the future.
That doesn't bode well for the Bulldogs.
    Cheers
