    Default OTT-BYM Mission 11 - Flash Fry The Turkey ! - 19th Dec 1916

2Lt Will Power wwas thoroughly cheesed off.. "Well, I think this is a pretty rotten war. Everything’s rotten. The weather’s rotten. This coffee is rotten – to say nothing of it being half cold. That record that some cad keeps playing on the gramophone is rotten. And our half-baked Mess caterer is also rotten – putrid in fact. In a few days it will be Christmas and there’s no turkey for dinner, we need to do something about it" he stormed.
“Well why don’t you go and find us one” was the general response to his outburst.
"I jolly well will, I’ll go and fetch it right now, you see if I don’t" he retorted as he snatched up his flying helmet and strode out to the flight line...

Earlier that day the more mundane business of war had been detailed to 2lt Justin Hale and his observer AM.2 Reg Sole - a photo run over the Hun trenches to see what they were up to today - or more precisely where they were up to, as they had of late been digging a new series of trenches across their position and HQ had an interest in how far they had got with the project. Hale decides they will use the new machine, an Armstrong Whitworth FK8. Or Big Ack as it was affectionately known.
2lt Baz Fife-Brand, Two Dads, had been detailed as their escort for the morning. He'd done a good job, staying close around their tail keeping a wary eye out, he now sat at their five o'clock as they began their run in.

Power, sat atop a stunned turkey, recently obtained from a Belgian farmer under the nose of the hungry Hun is making a break for the lines, hotly pursued by a Albatros D.II piloted by Ltn Franz Theiler who is worried it's an elaborate trap as the Nieuport pilot appears to be almost standing in the cockpit ?

Baz clocks three enemy machines and Power's Nieuport heading in their general direction, he selects the closest Hun, a red nosed Albatros D.II with a deaths head on the side, and looses off a long range burst at it. As he does so a blue nosed Hun machine opens up on him and rounds clatter through his wings... Stark swears loudly as his left gun seizes solid.

Sole snaps the fifth trench in the line, his third plate, as guns rattle into life behind him. Power's unexpectedly (to him) turns left and opens up at close range on the red nosed Albatros. He surprisingly scores hits in spite of his struggling passenger. He takes hits himself from his pursuer in the grey nosed Albatros who still cannot understand the Nieuport pilot's actions as a Sopwith Pup narrowly misses him.

Having not read the brief properly the Nieuport is heading off the table in the next card which is a right turn..
"It's me or him" decides Power & launches the Turkey over the side. Theiler is somewhat aghast as a buddle of flapping feathers appears in the wake of the Nieuport - is this some devilish new weapon ?

That was a fun outing - the randomness is uncontrollable, I think if I did it again I would organise the randomly added cards into a sensible order of play to keep the 'Biggles' plane on track, rather than playing them blind as I did !
Still, the AI & random cards did give Power some unexpected shooting opportunities as well as nearly getting him killed and losing the squadron it's Christmas dinner !
I flew Baz, assisted the tandem with pre-planned moves until it broke for home & Power was all AI driven with random add-ins as directed by the scenario.

    Uncle says:

Well done chaps, all the pics obtained - HQ will be chuffed with that - couple of Eagles knocked down by the tandem chaps, congrats to both, think that's a beer to each of you

AM2 Reg Sole is awarded the bar to his Military Medal for his victories and service to King and country
Our gallant allies have also awarded him their Médaille Militaire (MMf) for the same reasons

Looks like Max and Hugo were the only fowl roasted - and flambeed - for Christmas. Although I think domestic turkeys do not so much as fly as plummet - so turkey pate, anyone?

Rep gun jammed...will cycle back for that.

I recognize that quote. One of my favourite 'Pythonisms'.

Well done, Dave, I don't think a closer victory could be had.

Looks like Bully Beef for the Boys, though.

Nice one Dave, an entertaining AAR. Had a go at this today and the turkey steal and pursuit didn’t affect the ‘real’ mission much.

At least tenderised to be sure ! I expect it would have been gratefully received in whichever trench it landed in or near !
Thanks chaps, hope you enjoy the game too.

Great little action and some nice planes to boot. Pity about the Turkey but a welcome win for the Bulldogs.

That was a most enjoyable game report Dave, I was on tenderhooks all the way through wondering how it was going to end.

The big Ack team did a sterling job concentrating on the job in hand as well as staying alive and a kill to the pilot and observer was a bonus reward.

Powers was probably lucky he flew off the side of the board instead of the British side those A guns are deadly. I think his pursuer should have followed him off but maybe I forgot to put that in the brief.

Re you thoughts on the randomness of the moves for Powers/Biggles, initially that's how I was going to play it. Random moves but you decide the order of play. In the end I reasoned that the turkey would be causing a random move when it jumped about and that would be unpredictable.
The main purpose of Biggles and the turkey was to be a bit of fun while the main mission was being carried out and that seemed to come out in your storyline, I hope that's how it played for you.

Shame about the Turkey Pate News though.

Rep gun is out of amunition, probably because I'm so far behind in my reading.

It worked fine up to a point but when they AI threw up a turn and the random draw adds another any semblance of directional control goes right out the window, so that's the way I'd go if I did it again but it was fun trying it out.
