The last flying night at my place saw us tackle the next phase of our ‘planes through the years’ series that I have called (very tongue in cheek) The clash of the Titans!
I spent a lot of time pouring over the scenario builder in Honzo’s magnificent app and had to jump to November/December 1916 to get to the next pairings (in terms of official miniatures). After a lot of pondering and comparing, I decided on the following pairing:
Nieuport 16/17, respawing as SPAD S.VII and Albatros DII respawing as Albatros D.III
Given that both sides had the ability to respawn, we agreed that the boom card would in fact be BOOM!
The first shots were exchanged between Nungesser’s Nieuport 17 and Szepessy’s D.II (not really Western Front but, oh well…)
Meanwhile Baracca & Boelcke were also exchanging unpleasantries
Mutual jamming saw both Nungesser Szepessy avoiding combat while trying to clear their guns before recommencing firing runs at each other
The resulting near collision allowed Baracca who had disengaged from Boelcke to get in a passing shot at Szepessy
But an Immelmann by Szepessy set him up nicely to retaliate
The following manoeuvring saw Nungesser caught in an Albatros sandwich
And further manoeuvring saw more exchanges of fire
And again and again!
With the almost inevitable result
While things continued to heat up on this side of the mat, the respawn D.III was roaring in to contribute to the mayhem
Almost immediately after, the remaining D.II bites the dust
But Brumowski is determined to make his presence felt
But Nungesser is determined that the D.IIIs won’t get off that lightly
Which results in another jam but his shots struck home
And Baracca chips in
Oh no, Nungesser finally succumbs to the sustained attacks
At this stage of the evening we decided to call it ‘stumps’ and, as the Central Powers had both respawned and this was the first Entente aircraft shot down, we decided to call it a win to the Entente.
