Default Deepest shipwreck found: the USS Samuel B Roberts

The wreck of the USS Samuel B Roberts, a DE sunk in the battle off Samar the centermost action of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, 25-OCT-44.
This was the famous defense of the amphibious fleet by a TF of escort carriers, DDs and DEs against a 23 ship strong force including BBs and CAs.

Thanks for the links. Those Tin Can guys had big brass ones and in that engagement they were bigger than normal. The History Channel (back when they did actual history) had a great documentary on that engagement.

One of those battles where David somehow defeats Goliath. The destroyer force acted like they were cruisers or more!

Nice spot, Karl. I didn't know anyone was even looking for this bit of history.

Apparently, Victor Vescovo has been doing deep sea exploration for some years now; he's been mapping the bottoms of the oceans.

Good timing! I've been reading The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors which details the crews and battle. Really great book if you are interested in the battle. There are so many heroic stories to be told from so many different sailors and ships, it's incredible.
