Origins 2022 – game 6 – Raid on Madang Sat 9am
5 pilots were sent up into the air over the Japanese installations at Madang, New Guinea.
2 Americans started off with P-38s to strafe the defenses and hangars to soften Madang up for the oncoming B-25s.
3 JAAF pilots from the 78th Sentai lifted off inKi-61s to face the American attackers.
Madang installation consisted of 4 hangar complexes, 3 AA guns and 5 AA MGs.
The Japanese coming on the flank have a little trouble coordinating their attack. 2 Heins fall behind the Lightnings and will have a difficult time engaging them.
The Americans come in low over the sea at strafing altitude.
The Japanese above watch helplessly, too high to interfere.
First exchange is between Lightning 2 (base #) and ground MGs.
The two P-38s have their way over the airfield as the Japanese air defense is in difficulty forming any resistance.
The slower Heins do their best to catch up with the Lightnings as the Americans slow down on their strafing runs.
A string of smoking debris trails behind the path of the American planes that are having their way over Madang.
The Japanese finally start to cause the Lightnings to notice they have company.
Evasive maneuvers didn’t throw off #5 Hein and he riddles the silver P-38.
Karl in the green P-38 gains the attention of 2 Heins.
On his 4th run down the runway Karl is finally set upon by the Japanese.
Karl’s Lightning is sandwiched by a pair of Heins and pummeled. (He will return in a B-25)
Karl’s wingman, J.J., is treated badly and also is downed, splashing down just off the jungle coast.
In come the second wave, the B-25s. AA guns blast away but miss Karl’s green bomber.
As Karl flies into the full force of the Japanese his nose gunner gives the Heins the message that he means business.
The Japanese watch helplessly as the B-25s have a clear path to the hangars.
Karl’s bombardier in the excitement of battle jumps the gun and drops early.
J.J.’s tail gunner shows he is as well trained as Karl’s nose gunner.
J.J.s bombs land right in amongst the hangars but unfortunately cause no damage.
At the end of the raid the Japanese can claim victory as all of their hangars survived. 3 were badly damaged but not destroyed.
I was really excited to run this game as it was the first opportunity to use my Madang mat. Hopefully it will get it's share of battles.
