Huzzah! Game 1 – Battle of Britain
The first game run at Huzzah had two waves of Dornier Do 17s crossing the channel on their bombing mission to Britain. They had to cross the length of a 4’ x 6’ mat and exit the far side. They were escorted by a pair of Bf 109 Es. RAF defenders flew a pair of Hurricanes against the first wave and a pair of Spitfires against the second wave..
The Dorniers were flying randomly. Their deck (all 3 flew the same card, in formation) had 2 straights,1 stall, 1 turn in each direction, 1 slip in each direction, 1 climb treated as a stall, 1 dive that repeated the previous non-turn.
The first wave of Do 17s reaches the coast of Britain.
The 109s engage the RAF ahead of the approaching bombers.
6/JG26 Flight Leader gets on the tail of Hurricane RF-F…
But the crafty RAF pilot loses the 109.
The 109 tries to get back on the Hurricane’s tail.
The Hurricane gets in a hasty shot at the Dornier below but can’t find it’s mark. As he passes over the Do 17, the rear gunner plugs him.
The second Hurricane jumps a 109. The distraction of the 109 keeps RF-D from diving down on the bombers.
One 109 starts to gain on a Hurricane from behind.
Then a second…
The pilots busy flying.
RF-F coming in on the lead Do 17’s 1 O’clock from above.
Slashing between the two Dorniers, RF-F avoids any serious damage.
RF-D has to think about the one 109 behind him while doing as much damage as he can to the one in front.
Success!
RF-F gets in a good shot at the trailing bomber while taking a bit of damage himself.
RF-F then takes a long shot at the flanking Do 17.
Too much of a good thing. Another shot at the flanking Do 17 has some good result but the trailing Dornier hits an oil line and the Hurricane spits out thick black smoke.
The first wave successfully exits the mat and off to their target.
Not one of them reached even half damage.
(damage counters for all 3 bombers, lead on top, flanking to the right and trailing to the left)
A second wave of Dorniers cross the channel. This wave is intercepted by Spitfires.
A pair of 109s closes in on a Spitfire blowing a few holes into it.
With one Spitfire engaged a second flies above the Dornier formation. (card underlead Do 17)
Overlapping the flanking bomber the Spit send a stream of lead into the tailing Dornier.
A third Spit takes on a 109, neither of them backing down closing in for a very close range shot.
A pair of Spitfires regroup behind the flight of Dorniers.
109 Yellow ‘9’ tries to intercept but closes too fast and overlaps. The Spitfire gets in a long range shot on hit bomber target.
Spitfire ‘H’ turns up the heat on the Dornier formation.
A deadly shot takes out all the gunners on Dornier ‘F’
Damage begins to accumulate on the trailing Do 17s as the pair of Spitfires have doggedly latched on to their tails.
The first victory! A Dornier spirals down into the British countryside below.
The victorious Spitfire now latches on to the lead bomber’s tail.
The trailing bomber collects a Boom but it is not a true Boom. I used my random event list instead of the Boom. Robert (RJG173) kindly made my list into a deck of cards which I used through Huzzah!. In this case the bomber was forces into making 3 left turns unknown to the RAF.
Two Spits beat on the trailing Do 17 as the third Spitfire catches up.
What’s this Dornier doing? Not following his leader isn’t normal but he does get out of the shooting arcs of the Spits behind him.
The third Spitfire reversed to engage the oncoming 109s.
The lead Dornier makes a break for it but the pair of Spits say “Not so fast Heinz”.
The 109s desperately try to distract the Spits from the bombers.
Not enough distraction to save this Do 17. A lucky long shot sets the port engine ablaze.
Relentless Spitfire. The lead bomber starboard engine begins to smoke.
The trailing Dornier goes from bad to worse and is sent spiraling to the ground.
So close to making the clouds at the edge of the board the lead Dornier is set on fire and can take no more.
The second wave of Dorniers is destroyed!
One complete Dornier wave got through and one was destroyed. Overall a draw.
