Thread: Attack from the Sun - a Wings of Prague 2022 scenario

Default Attack from the Sun - a Wings of Prague 2022 scenario

Our man Zdenek brought up the idea for this year's Prague Con. An Entente flight gets jumped by Germans. There will be face-down cards on the table, and they will activate when the Tommy gets close enough. We worked on it together with other members, and here is what may be the final scenario.

    Download the Jump Cards
    A4: https://mega.nz/file/MuozBJzD#YBJTN8...jpm1x00oac0w6Q
    Letter: https://mega.nz/file/4qhFQYKZ#TWaCyw...y_iULLpnvkl5I8

Here is the setup. There are no Germans on the table, although there may be one or two German tandems set up, it depends. Germans are waiting in the sun. Each German player will place a randomly drawn Jump Card on the mat. That is where his aircraft enters the game. The scenario itself can be a dogfight, but bombing or Balloon busting is more fun.

German players can enter the game any time they want, but they must enter the game as soon as the closest entente aircraft crosses fully behind the center of the Jump Card.

Then they flip the Jump Card. They can use another card to help place the flipped Jump Card at the same spot. They cannot rotate the Jump Card after it has been flipped.

There is a black arrow on each Jump Card, where the German aircraft enters the game.

If there are any red arrows and a damage number on the Jump Card, the German player can choose one of the red directions instead, but receives that much damage to start with.

The Jump Card is flipped and the German aircraft enters the game in the Movement step, before a Maneuver is flipped. After the German is placed, he will immediately plan his maneuvers (for this Movement step and the rest of the Turn). If you play with altitudes, the Germans should be at +1 (not tested).

    I really like this idea.

For additional uncertainty, I’d have a couple more cards placed that when flipped would turn out to be be dummy cards.

Good idea Bob. If the mat is big enough there should be enough space to add some dummies without making it overcrowded and losing tactical opportunities for the attackers.

Fun and creative! I’ll have to try it!

There could be a dummy card as Bob suggested. If flipped, the German assigned to that card will start lined up with the mat edge shown by the arrow, and positioned so it is facing the center of the Jump Card.

    Looks good!

I hope to be able to try this sometime - I find the "line up opposite each other and fly straight ahead to contact" quite stale.

Tim thanks, i will post the files soon. They don't have to be printed fancy, just to serve their purpose.

Me too. Got the Wednesday night crew playing 'bounce' games recently. We dice off to decide who bounces who; use a D12 to see where the attackers come from on the clock - either as a team, or, individually and to really mess with their heads, sometimes roll a D12 to decide their facing. Spacing is adjusted accordingly. Makes it much more interesting

Card designed by Max Headroom, but saved in an album of Jager's.
So how many books are in your personal library?

Chaps, I will be more than happy to play this or any other game, just to feel the spirit of a group WoG game again with friends! See you in Praha!

Just wanna make clear that the person who came up with the Letter format should be hanging by balls in a cold draft.

Interesting approach. I would do it with many dummy cards. Without dummies you know a plane will appear and can plan your move as you pass a card, so it's not really a surprise.

From what research I can find on the interwebs, Letter format was established in 1921, while A0 (the basis for A4 and all the rest) became a German standard in 1922. That standard spread to the rest of Europe.

There are some instances of items which use Imperial measurements that are not likely to change to metric. The threads on the screw of a camera tripod is one example. I believe the threads on the air stem of a tire is another.

Yes Tim, you are right. This can be used as a general system to randomly deploy one side (or both sides). In that case there should be enough Dummy cards to make it less predictable.

I am gonna make two sets of dummy cards so both sides can use it and start the game in completely random positions all over the mat.
