    Default OTT-BYM Mission 8 – “A Thorn in the Side” 27 Nov 1916 {Stumptonian}

    Read the full briefing HERE:

Remnants of the 197th Infantry Brigade found themselves stranded in the “Frankfurt Trench” approximately 300 yards behind the German lines.
The 52nd Squadron ‘Bulldogs’ have been tasked with escorting a pair of 57th Squadron RE.8s who are each planning to drop a satchel containing a message urging the men to “Hold on – Help is coming tomorrow”.
Pity they couldn’t have included at least some rations and bandages for the hard-pressed survivors.

The first RE.8 to approach is piloted by 2Lt Lindsay Moore, flying his first mission for the 57th, with veteran observer AM.3 Bill Holder.

Moore is indecisive and Holder is left ‘holding the bag’.
“Sorry lads …” he says out loud, shouting back at Holder “We’ll try another run!”

Across the lines, the Adler have put out a similar sortie.

Luftstreitkräfte FFA 245 pilot Fwbl Lukas Himmel-Spaziergänger and observer Ltn Roland-Reinhart Dietrich-Daimler are escorted by Adler aces Ltn Günther Giesebrecht in a yellow Albatros D.II and Ltn Till Hübner in a camouflaged one, similar in livery to the machine flown by recently downed ace Oswald Boelcke.

The call came to the Adler group from the front line, requesting that they take out the Britishers occupying ‘Frankfurt’ “ein für alle Mal” < once and for all >

To accomplish that directive Roland-Reinhart Dietrich-Daimler (or “R2-D2” as he is nicknamed by the Zweisitzer group) will drop 12.5kg bombs by hand.

    Victory Conditions

    Bulldogs Starting Points : 50
    Direct bomb hits: 4 x -10 = -40
    Planes shot down:
    Planes FRTB:
    Successful bag drop = 0

    Total : 10

    Adler

    Aircraft shot down : 2 x 10 = 20
    Aircraft FRTB : 2 x 5 = 10
    Bag drop failed : = 10
    RFC points wiped out : = 15

    Total : 55

    Resounding Adler Victory!

    ==============================================
Well that certainly turned in the Adler favour!

Three Engine Damage in one game – two to the same aircraft! Never had that happen before.
The Boom! was icing on the cake.
Both escorts FRTB – the Bulldogs never had a chance.

I am just hoping Lady Luck doesn’t come back at me with a vengeance in an upcoming game.

Giesebrecht has been on a roll and has his 20th victory.
I think my next choice for a skill will be either Daredevil or Super Ace

Huebner came close to seeing his ‘odometer’ click over to a third ace skill as well, but will have to be satisfied with two ‘probables’. Not bad for two shots fired.

I wonder if the slower BE.2c suggested for this mission might have let the Bulldogs hit their targets.

The sturdier RE.8 I chose is not so maneuverable when you misjudge the distances ..

Thanks, Baz, for an interesting scenario.

    Hi Pete

Nice story and some crack shooting from the Adlers. Poor luck on the Dice rolls from the Bulldogs. Just a small correction due to my bad instructions on victory points, but there are no minus points for friendly planes shot down or FRTB for the pilots only plus points for getting an enemy plane shot down or FRTB, it is a hyphen not a minus sign. So the points for Bulldogs should be plus 10, makes it a bit better than -20! Secondly, only 40 of the 50 pts were taken out, not all (no additional strafing) so 15 points to Eagle not 20, so total 55.

Did the machine guns or infantry get any shots in?

Great pictures and good to see the scenario carried out with different machines. It was easier to line up and make the bag drop with the slower Be2’s, but harder to get them in position to shoot and defend.

    Congratulations to Giesebrecht.

No - altitude or distance kept my Adler safe. (I thought the infantry were conserving ammo (?) because I had considered letting them shoot the C.III when it was directly overhead)

A signal victory for your Adlers, Pete; and finally a 20th for Giesebrecht. Huzzah!

The mess bill for the week should be paid by Gunther for becoming a super ace - for all practical purposes.

FYI - you'll have to take the rep from my mistargeting. So consider it applied to this post.

Well, if the bombing had been done by the rules the Star Wars heroes would have missed their target by a country mile and then some ! Great action and presentation as always though.

    Onkel says:

Well there is some doubt over the accuracy of the bombing but none about peoples shooting as the litter of fallen machines and sight of retreating damaged aircraft testify. Well done all - much to celebrate
Ltn Günther Giesebrecht is awarded the The War Merit Cross (Lippe) on attaining his 20th victory and significant contributions to the war effort for the Kaiser

I'm just pleased my bunch aren't flying across the lines from your killers, well done Pete that was a complete wipe out and an entertaining read as well. I noticed the engine damage as I was reading through the game and thought it unusual, don't recall ever having that myself but my memory isn't what it used to be. I think!

20 kills is pretty amazing, although I suppose with his ace skills that's going to help build the tally it's a big milestone even so, well done to him.

I used the Be2c's and dropped the message on target without any problem but I was flying as low as possible to make it easier, of course turning away from the target took the Bee directly over one of the trenches at low level which was a very bad move. Flying high with an Albatros Clll I couldn't hit the target at all. So maybe height and speed make it much harder, interesting thought though.

Looking back I have to agree - cocked that one up thinking the hand dropped bombs would fall right below the machine (like taking a photo) when dropped from Level 2.

Changes the score dramatically, but my Adler still squeaked out a win.

Are you forgetting the trench boys get 50 points if they take no damage?

    Sneaky Adlers.

Ace skills definitely play into it, especially his Sniper and Lucky Pilot. I don't think the Itchy Trigger Finger has saved him from taking damage. Yet.
Trying to decide if I want the ability to take two 'steeps' in a row - I usually control Giesebrecht so that would work - or have the quick recovery option. That one could be pretty deadly.

Hmmm...not so fast ke-mo sah-bee*. You don't get 15 points for "30-50 RFC points taken off", just for the 2 planes shot down (20 pts), 2 planes FRTB (10 pts) and bag drop not made (10 pts) = 40 pts.

Cheeky, Huns. You have to watch them every step of the way.

A brilliant victory ruined by a slight rules oversight and by those durned accountants. No worries I've been there - illegal transfer of ace skill, claimed kill for Hun planes colliding, etc., etc., etc.

    * I grew up on a reserve so I'm allowed to write stuff like this. Pale faces - not so much.

I was thinking if a different adjective for those accountants ....
