Thread: Legion of Light out for Humanitarian Help

  1. #1

Default Legion of Light out for Humanitarian Help

    Morning all pilots here.
Let me brief you about the situation we have here.
Although my base of operation is 445 km west of the busiest refugee welcome center, many of us are already engaged.
As for yesterday approximately a million people fled from Ukraine, of which 600.000 entered Poland.
Not blowing our own trumpet, but the scenes on the border, the peoples reactions, immediate help actions all are heartwarming. Poles from different parts of the country rushed to provide those battered families (women and children mostly, men 15-60 are not allowed to leave Ukraine) everthing they may need.

Here, round Opole, we also trying hard to absorb and give shelters to all that come and may come in weeks/months to come, for Putin's war may last long...
The good things: many Ukrainians already live among us. For last several years lots of them have been coming to Poland looking for jobs. They are highly motivated and get high marks from their employers. Cultural bonds between both nations have always been strong and now they are getting even stronger. Historical troubles fade away. Those who are already here help the newcomers.
The bad ones: we are not prepared for such a wave of refugees that need all regular services: medical support, kindergartens, schools etc. However, people as well as local administration are on alert and do everything what is possible and more. And time, which not everybody has enough...

Of course you can not help everybody. What we (my family, my friends) are doing is here.
    1. My wife and me are supporting the cause financially, sending money to places we know could spend them well. My local Bar Association provide legal help for them pro bono.
    2. My younger daughter highschool activists collected money to buy and send some survival equipment to Ukraine. My wingman Sven (Marechallannes) alreday supported them (Thank you Kamerad!).
    3. A friend of mine rented (at his own cost) a fully furnished new house for 5 women and 8 children in Opole; he treats them as his own family.
    4. My older daughter's boyfriend Sasza (yes, Ukrainian, they live in Wrocław) works for a foundation already helping refugees. He personally takes care for two young Ukrainian girls, refugees.

So if you, the members of newly formed Legion of Light (as my wingman Dan-Sam so eloquently put) want to help the cause, I can manage it.
If you trust me (I hope you do), I can handle the money (if you are willing to send it). Will report what they are spend for in detail.

    My PayPal address is adw.sieradzki@gmail.com
    Please add: Help for Refugees.

I will inform the beneficiaries that help came from our WoG worldwide community.

I typically do not donate to large organizations because so much of the money goes to "overhead" costs, but groups on the ground like this one will get my support.

A game pub in Rome asked for a game session to collect funds for Ukraine. They already organize an Azul tournament this Sunday:

In a couple of weeks, a Wings of Glory session will probably follow, and the pub owner looks forward to send to Andrzej whatever he will collect.

    Evening, Legionnaires! March 11th update:
Thanks to your generosity over 11.000 PLN has been collected so far.
Today my wife and me reported at the Supply Point Turawa Park (a huge shopping center outside our town where they collect they most necessary stuff for the refugees incoming to Opole).
A busy place indeed. Lots od people, mamy kids around. They told us what they are actually short of and we rushed to the nearby mall with the funds of the Legion.
    Stay tuned...

    Day 2, chaos.
Today we focused on buing bulks of "long term" food, the refugees need most. On the way to the mall we saw those weary people queing to the Supły Depot...a picture one has not seen since the fall of communism here.
We spent 2.417,57 PLN today.Click image for larger version.

I talked to a volunteer on the Depot site and told him about our action and the Forum in generał. He was impressed and told us we are the heaviest individual suppliers there. Well done Legionnaires!

Thank you again, guys! You are proving this is The Community!
    Well, Day 3, Sunday.
Financial support is very important, but giving one's time is sometimes what matters as well. Today we took a ten y.o. Ukrainian boy, Ihor, to our house for we had been told he is missing men's company (his father stayed in UA) and...chess! Well, I am a mediocre chess player, but he appeared to be a...slayer! 2:0 to Ihor, oh man, he trapped me several times with "my pants down", so to say!

Well put, Wingman! But if Ukrainians have soldiers like chess players, we are secured!

As you say Andy , money is good but care and affection to those who need it is immeasurable. With this you can change victims lives and ease their anxiety as to the future. Just being there is often enough.

Thank you once more, friends. You give me wings.
Please forgive me for not replying to all the posts individually.
I am really impressed how the things are going.
To date an absolutely awesome sum of 11.437,80 PLN has been collected. It makes approximately 2.642 USD.
I have spent 4.515,93 PLN for material help: hygienics, school stuff, but mostly long term food and 600 PLN for a direct help given to refugee mothers of 8 kids stationed here to help them buy supplies as needed.
    More info tomorrow.
    Stay safe.
