Thread: Official Martinsyde G.100/G.102 'Elephant' Painting Thread

Default Official Martinsyde G.100/G.102 'Elephant' Painting Thread

The first Elephant version was the G-100. The engine was subsequently upgraded for the G-102 version. This is the Shapeways Martinsyde Elephant G-102 version by Reduced Aircraft Factory that I painted based on a drawing located on the Wings Palette website (wp.scn.ru) of a Martinsyde Elephant with the Australian Flying Corps (AFC). Decals per Miscellaneous Miniatures. According to the Australian War Memorial website, Mrs. H. Bickford presented a Martinsyde G-102 (serial #A1593) to the A Flight, 1st Squadron, AFC on 24 May 1917. There is a photograph of the fuselage inscription, as depicted in the drawing, on the website. Priscilla Bickford was the third wife of successful businessman and pharmacist/chemist, Harry Bickford. Both were residents of Adelaide, South Australia.

How does the pilot of a one-man airplane operate a rear-firing gun? Or is that some other kind of device on your model?
So how many books are in your personal library?

According to the datafile they were "usually supplemented by a second Lewis gun on a No.10 Mark I mounting for rearward firing." Photos show some that way, some not, maybe depending on the mission. Heavy lifter, overly stable, suitable for bombing or recon patrol. The photo on p30 looks like it wouldn't be too tough -- pilot sat low, reach across the body with right hand and fire away.

Excellent work, and something a bit different to enjoy.
    Thanks for posting this Craig.

Great looking model and fantastic paint job Craig. A nice bit of Adelaide history too. I am also thinking that Harry Bickford was the son of William Bickford and they founded Bickford beverages in 1864. Bickford Cordials has a big factory up the road from me although I do not think the family has any connection anymore. Thanks for posting.

Lovely miniature! That rear firing gun is ah, er ‘novel’!

Love the connection to my home state! I can see Mt Lofty from my front door.

The current 'Unofficial Stats Committee' manoeuvre deck is 'Y'

I haven't had a chance to change it on the cards yet

Gary, you are correct. There is a good deal of info on him & his businesses in his 1927 obituary. The link is:

Nicely done! I really like those "Presentation Machines". The Elephant wasn't a great fighter, but it was a good long-range scout, and it served from winter 1915/16 through the end of the war -- a rare distinction!
