Thread: C Class Coastal Balloons

    Post C Class Coastal Balloons

Has anyone used a C-Class Coastal Balloon in a game? I thought I saw an AAR with such a balloon but search doesn't seem to be working well. If so, what movement deck was used and how many weapons/firing arcs were used. I found a card in files for such a beast and would like to use it in a game.
So how many books are in your personal library?

That is a cool airship. Where did you it? It’s a bit more manageable than the Zepp (which is cool) on a game board.

Hi Joe, the airship belongs to Gary (Baxter) and it is a Clipper original.

    I've got one as well.

Mine turned up on ebay, sold as an unused item.

No drawings online of any kind, or quality, to do a card for this balloon.

I once came across a card for this balloon in the files section but cannot find it now. The card had no movement deck listed or firing arcs. That is why I asked my questions, which no one has seemed to answer.

I made a card for such an airship. Here is an AAR:

    https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sh...ndenburg-W-12s

    And here is the card:

    https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/al...hmentid=308636

We use it with 360° coverage and the movement is one card width.

I knew I had seen it somewhere. I was looking in the files area. You should probably upload it to there for future reference.

I noticed in the AARs posted above, there seemed to be only one gun with a somewhat forward arc. Did you use a B-firing gun?

Ok, I'll upload it to the files along with the scenario rules we use for it.

The links others have posted appear to be using the SSZ / North Sea class airships, which were different craft. As far as I could tell from my research, the C class was generally armed with a single machine gun mounted on a platform on top of the envelope and another single machine gun carried in the gondola. I have not been able to work out how the gondola gun was mounted, but since there was an engine at either end presumably it could only fire to the sides. In the end we just used B/B with both guns having a 360° arc, for simplicity if nothing else. LP

An interesting link - artist's impression of Brandenburg W.29s attacking a C-class airship.

This image of a detailed model may give you an idea about the gun in the fuselage Dom, looks like mounted in the rear cockpit.

Mostly powered by 150 hp Sunbeam engines, those that survived the war were scrapped in 1919. The C23 was 200 feet long and had an envelope capacity of 170,000 cubic feet. A close up with a side view of the gondola and propulsion system fashioned from two Avro 504 fuselage sections.
