On Tuesday we drove to Lyndoch in the Barossa Valley to celebrate my grandson’s 12th birthday. As mine is the day before we usually share the celebration and this time we shared a gift - a flight around the local area in a helicopter. His younger brother also shared the ride and they had a blast!
When we returned to their house, their landlord was just returning from working in the vineyard and so our daughter introduced us. I discovered during the conversation that he was ex-RAAF and had served in Vietnam flying Broncos.
An excerpt from his story…
‘Ken Semmler always wanted to fly. As a boy growing up in South Australia, he surrounded himself with model aircraft and developed a love of flying that would stay with him forever.
He became a fighter pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force and was one of 36 Australians who flew close air support missions with the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.’
