    Default Fire and Slips

I've seen a few times in threads on this forum where people have mentioned doing slips when ones plane is on fire. I've looked through my rulebooks and can't find where slips are mentioned in conjunction with fire. I mention it because in another WWI air game I've seen a rule where a pilot can slip his aircraft to avoid fire in the cockpit and thought maybe that's what the Wings of Glory rule is about. Can someone enlighten me? Thanks.

    Check the maneuver card.

If the card doesn't have an upward arrow in the bottom corner, it isn't a straight, and therefore legal to use while on fire.

But where in the rules does it say one can't move straight while on fire?

In the section on 'Special Damages'. The wording is 'the airplane on fire cannot plan any straight manoeuvre' (p12 RAP 2014).

Point to Note: This is a rule put in place by Ares, and wasn't in the Nexus rules. So, if you are using the Wings of War rules, you might have missed this.

Yep. All my game materials are of the old Nexus variety. The only thing I own that says "Ares" are some of the miniatures.

Yep, and I play with a house rule that says fires don't automatically extinguish themselves after three turns.

I like topics like these. I also think that maybe no shooting should occur if you are on fire or are smoking. I believe personal survival would be the prime consideration for any pilot.

Part of the reason I created my house rule about fires is because once a plane was on fire the pilots sole goal was to survive. It wasn't a case of "I know it'll go out in a little while so I'll keep fighting". To me a fire is essentially the same as the explosion card, but in slow motion. The pilot has some unknown amount of time to get his crate down and save himself. It just makes fire a bit more realistic (to me anyway).

In a lot of my games people fly away from a burning plane so they don't often get a shot off. If the fire is going to take them out you don't want him to get a shot on you.
